Interesting. The Appalachians are old worn green mountains with high peaks in the 2000 meter range instead of the stark cragged monoliths like many ranges. There's a 3500 KM trail running the length of it. I've not hiked the whole thing but have hiked a portion. The time and money commitment is considerable. Tried to find a photo for ya but nothing on the computer. Nice place to live. If you'd like to know more about the people that populate the southern portion here's an excellent source. Those old mountain people get a bad rap from the press. They're amazing resourceful generous people who live(d) a simple life.

Anyways post up more photos. Or do you have a site?

Hi Martin,
All our mountain ranges in Australia are old and worn our highest mountain Mt. Kosciuszko is 2228 metres above sea level. We hear good things about the "hill billies" and I do not see that as a derogatory term but of a people that are resourceful, have a unique culture and are a very sharing people. I like listening to the old folk songs from the region that they are trying to archive and also keep alive. In a similar vein in Australia we are trying to save as many aboriginal languages that are left as possible there were hundreds of languages before the Europeans came. My great great grandmother was aboriginal from N.E. Victoria near Yackandandah in the Hills the other aboriginals from the Murray river plain said the people from the hills walk with a strange gait because one leg is shorter than the other to cope with the hill slopes .
My website is peterkinchington.com
P.S. 3,500km is quite a trail!
