locations around Bozeman

Ill be in the Bozeman/Ruby River area for a week in October with my 8x10. Any suggested locations or "must see" places for landscape or towns or urban archeology?

Go up north a bit and visit the Formulary. There are a lot of beautiful sights there to see and about 80 miles north is Glacier park. Maybe it is too far for you, but it is wonderful country and the Formulary is a great shopping place for photographers.

They have labs to use for rent.

A few of my favorite towns that have lots of history with mining are Butte, Anaconda and Virginia City. Depending on where you are they are all within a short (1-2hr) drive.

I am a big fan of the Crazy Mountains. They are best viewed by driving to Wilsall, MT. The look big because of all the hay/prarie land surrounding them.

If you are up for a drive, the prettiest road in Montana is the Beartooth Hwy between Red Lodge and Cooke City. It may be closed in October so if you do go, check the road reports. But if its open and you go, you will be amazed. It is truly spectacular.

Enjoy the time. It's my home state and one of the most beautiful places in the world.

That's right. My groups will be there through most of October, so say hello. (The labs will be in use though).

I shall watch this thread with interest as I shall be shooting aroung there for a while after the workshops finish.
BTW, Yellowstone is not far away and is a good place to photograph.

Having lived in Billings, Montana, I think the entire state is a must see.

My best advice is to befriend the locals who can steer you towards those places the visitor usually misses.

Enjoy the fourth largest state of the Union. Get over to Paradise Valley, just south of Livingston.

from bozeman you can go just a bit out of town to the trailhead that leads up to the big "M" logo on the mountain. I suggest taking the easy trail if you have any gear at all. From up there you can see most of the town including the college.
