In 35mm photography, one can estimate the angle of view of a lens by placing your thumb about the same distance as your chosen focal length in front of your eyeball. For instance, to estimate the coverage of my 55mm lens, I would put my thumb 55mm in front of my eyeball. The area covered by your nail would approxmate the coverage of the lens.

I have been recceing some location that I intend to photograph with my rollei TLR. But since the rollei is a bit cumbersome to travel with (i'm on a bike in urban areas that are not very safe). Also I don;t have lens cap or hood and don;t want to damage it.

Is there some aid or rule that I can use so I know roughly what area would be covered by my 75mm rollei?

Try using the distance from the tip of the thumb to the MP joint (metatarsal-phylange joint, basically the whole length of the thumb) at 75mm from your eye. My thumb is almost exactly 6cm. Of course you can hold your thumb vertically or horizontally

Make image frame cards for each lens as describe by Ansel Adams. I think it was in the book Camera.
