I posted this idea in the thread about the trip Gene led to the Quabbin Reservoir last week, but it deserves a better audience than it may have gotten there.

In addition to teaching, I direct a gallery at the school where I work. It is nicely laid out, very well lit and accessible to the public at least every weekday and, with some creative management, on weekends. We host 6 to 7 professional shows of artwork a year, each lasting 4 weeks. We take no commissions on sales but suggest that selling artists might make a donation that is a small (10%) portion of their sales. Artists pay for the opening expenses (food, wine, whatever) and the school publishes a color card that is mailed to about 500 people. More cards can certainly be published. The school runs a very popular black and white photography program and would benefit from a show of work from this group. In fact, we view the gallery as a teaching space, a place where kids live with work long enough to make serious observations and really begin to absorb the lessons good work teaches. An ad in Art New England is a possibility but not a certainty.

Here's the rub: the first available time slot is a year from September. There is a possibility that we may be able to move to something next May, but I think not. A summer show, late this summer or next summer, is also possible, but it would take some arranging and has its own shortcomings. By the way, we are insured for visiting artwork to the tune of $25k. We have never had a visiting artist's work sustain any damage (15 years) and never had a theft.

Can we talk here? I've had a number of responses from people who read the former posting but I think there may be more of you out there for whom this could be a good thing. PM me. I'll post a good picture of the gallery soon.
And for the sake of this show, New England is a concept, not a geographic limitation. Where do you live?? (I did this to include dlin and sbuczkowski at the very least.)

hi whitey -

i would be very interested in a local show.
i have a few questions though:

would participants be required to "gallery-sit" ?
is there some sort of theme for imagery ?

I'd be interested in particpating. Any ideas/guidlines on subject matter or themes?

Peter

In reply to all who have contacted me.
During the school year, there is no need for gallery sitting. If we wanted to doa summer thing we would have to work something out.

No theme yet. I thought we might want to get a group together for a party, I mean meeting sometime this summer and work out how to use the opportunity.

I can offer the use of the Valley Photo Center this summer as a meeting place. There's also Red Rose pizza just a few blocks south for some good food and drinks!!!

Just thought I'd bump this. Has anyone made any firm plans to party... I mean meet to discuss this show? We have a lot of time, so I figure, it'd be useful to think about what types of images we might think about making. The Red Rose sounds great, and there are plenty of places in and around Belmont, too!

Thanks

Thanks for the bump, Suzanne! No, I seem to have dropped the ball on this lately. I will get a PM to you soon and try to get some meeting stuff worked out. Gene has been sending his offers of shooting times, you've been wanting to get together for the show, Bill Hahn has been offering coffee and good conversation... I've been a stick in the mud.

Ah! But it is not too late! I can save myself from this virtual life and actually get out there to talk to people! MAYBE EVEN SHOOT SOME FILM!!!

Sorry, got carried away there. Let's do this soon. New England APUG'ers, let's get together.

Whitey, the woefully disorganized one.

I'm up for it. I would suggest NOT doing photography ... just getting to know each other ... but in any event, this sounds fascinating. Count me in -- unless a meteor hits the barn, and if the creak don't rise ...

A group exhibition? I'm coming from a "Solo" exhibition right now - so no problem. Will nudes be allowed?

When and Where?!!!
The Valley Photo Center, here in Springfield, is still a viable offer for a meeting place. Tho there is no show on the walls this summer. The schedule starts in Sept.
Gus & Paul's has great coffee and bagels, not to mention Red Rose pizza for later! :D

I am willing to travel to other locations. Meeting other NE-APUG'ers is the main purpose.
I will not be available Aug 5 - 8, wife's family "Cousins' Day" in Philly.

So...
How about a get-together this Saturday, or Sunday for that matter? If that's too quick, the last weekend in July works for me. Since we have people from Springfield, the far western burbs of Boston, the north shore, RI and Maine who have shown some interest in this, why don't we get together at the gallery itself? At least this would give folks a better idea of the space. What I have in mind is casual, seriously casual, with attendance having nothing at all to do with whether you show your work or not.

The school is a beautiful place, parking and meeting spaces are easy, we can get plenty of food and coffee for a morning meeting. We'll just leave the agenda wide open. You can bring gear or leave it home. If people want to shoot later in the day, I can suggest a couple of great spots near by, but I agree with Ed that we shouldn't overload the day with a get together and an organized shoot (besides, I'm not all that organized!)

Saturday at 10? PM me if interested and give me a valid email. I'll put an E-group together to get the ball rolling. If you have a better time, send that along too. I would love to see a regional thing get going here and I'm happy to put the physical resources of the school to use in promoting it.
This link will get you the directions to the school.

OK... so here we go

We're on

Seems to be a go for this Saturday at Belmont Hill School just off Rt. 2 in Belmont MA - 4 miles in from Rt 95. I'll bring some coffee and munchies. Bring prints, gear... anything or nothing. It'll just be nice to get together. Dirctions here. I'll post some signs at the parking lot (right in front of the art building, by the way,) but if you miss them, go to the flag poles. The photo room door is right there.

Any more interested? Come last minute if the spirit moves you. Come late! We've got Suzanne, Gene, Bill, me and... Jnanian?? Come on, you can even bring the kids. (Did I really say that?)

Looking forward to it.

Whitey

me am gonna be there! :D
I hope a few more can make it - sure would be nice to put faces to names.

gene

Wish I could be there, sounds like a lot of fun!

I'll be there - If at all possible. Double checking - 10:00 AM target time?

I'm assuming the target time is 10 am....

I'd love to be able to make it down to the meeting, unfortunatly I'll be down east this weekend (with camera gear though, so not that unfortunately). I've got a fair amount of family in the western mass area so any time I can make it down to visit them when folks are getting together, I'll cerntainly try to make it.

Peter

Last call!

We're getting together tomorrow at 10 at the Belmont Hill School photo classroom, exit 58 from Rt 2 in Belmont MA. No forewarning necessary, come join us if you can for coffee, conversation, a sharing of prints, ideas, plans for a group show and general bull------g about life and the cost (and beauty) of silver. All welcome, follow the signs once on campus.

see ya in the am!! :D

Done!

OK, so it wasn't the biggest gathering we've seen in years. A show is planned for September 06 (open to all who can get there work here reasonably) and good conversation was had by all of us. To Gene, Bill, Suzanne, and Ed - a big thanks for coming up and chatting. It's really nice to put faces with names - and avatars.

Perhaps a shooting session next? I know Gene is up for it.

I would like to send work for your upcoming show if it is a go could you pm me the details. Shipping from Toronto is not such a problem and if you would like I could involve about 5-15 APUGers from this area and send the work in mass to you. We have some pretty good artists up here and if it is a small van packed with art next year I can arrange all of this.
Bob.
