It could be worse, they could be emulating Anne Geddes or William Wegman.
Characterizing - actually labelling - any photographer as good, bad or indifferent isn't really of much use at all.
It is much more helpful to focus on particular facets of their work.
And in many cases, to focus only on particular segments of their work.
Every great artist has clunkers in their portfolio.
Neither their great accomplishments, nor their clunkers, define the photographer.
The only real value of centering one's attention on a particular photographer is that it helps one find work of value - or work that is schlock.

Depardon should be more celebrated outside of France than he is—as much for his photography than for his films.

Can't wait for a re-issue of Gossage's The Pond. That book is unobtainium. Prices on the used market are absurd.

Seems like he's not publishing with MACK anymore, so distribution might be a little more spotty. I haven't bought a copy yet but I will soon. Spanish Summer is great, as is Pontiac and American Winter. Sadly most of his greatest books are out of print and MACK just doesn't seem interested in reprinting,

It’s also intriguing that you mention Gardin. Most people, when thinking of Italian photographers, tend to go for Paolo Monti, Luigi Ghirri, or Ferdinando Scianna. But I like Gardin too.

As for Depardon, he’s a curious case. There’s no doubt he’s a skilled and talented photographer, but something about his work doesn’t quite resonate with me. If you are Italian (which I have a feeling you might be) could you share with me some modern Italian photographers you like? I only known Ciro Battiloro, Andrea Torrei, and Federico Borobio

Ah ok got it. Makes sense I guess. I normally try to stick to the unwritten rule "if you don't have anything nice to say about someone who is not present, don't say anything at all". But I don't mind alternative opinions on some of the people whose work I admire.
