i plan to pick up a Linhof Technica 4x5 (IV I think). It comes with Schneider 90mm and 150mm lenses, a Super Rollex 6x7 magazine and the Linhof universal finder. I kind of talked the price down from €1500 to €1300.
Although I experimented with a Technika 6x9, it's my first LF.
On the photo's on the internet it all looks good. Do you guys think €1300 is a fair price for a set like that?

Frank

Depends, is it a Technica or a Super Technica? Is the 90mm a Angulon or a Super Angulon? It is worth the time and effort to educate yourself on the various models and lens variants.
Good luck!

It's a Super Technika V and one lens is a Super Angulon 90mm and the other a Symmar 150mm.
I decided to take it.

The SA 90mm would be ~300 euros and the Symmar 200 perhaps if you hunt around.

So 800 Euros for a Technika V? pretty good deal! Now you just need some 5x4 holders

I got 2 new holders for €50, film is on it's way. In the meantime I can practice a bit.

You'll want more holders in the end (i prefer 6 for a day out with the 5x4), for practice stuff nothing beats Fomapan.

With 5x4 things like the extra graininess of Fomapan is a lesser issue, only problem is its reciprocity failure.

I ordered some hp5 to start with, but as Foma is a lot cheaper, it's a good idea to use that for practice.
One question comes up while playing with this camera. For focussing, the shutter needs to be open. The symmar has a "t" position, but the super angulon does not seem to have this. Is there an elegant solution for that? (Of course "b" can be used, but I cannot imagine there is no better way) Do I miss something obvious?

Save some weight and money, take one or two D/D holders, a box of film and change in a darkbag.

Your 90 should be in a Synchro-Compur shutter, in which case to open it for focusing there is a little lever on the side of the shutter. If that isn't the case, then just let us know what shutters you have.

If you get more holders, get Toyo with the shiny dark slides. They are the nicest to use by far and well worth the extra money. I have somewhere around 30 myself. The other alternative is to pick up a Grafmatic or two. Grafmatics hold 6 sheets of film. They also hold the film incredibly flat since the septums grab the film on three sides if they are adjusted to do so. I have five of those but mainly use them with a Polaroid conversion. Grafmatics are very convenient if that is what you are looking for.

Have fun!

Found the lever, thanks! It's very small and a bit hidden in the recessed lens board.

For the moment I'll go out with the two double cassettes I have now and see how it works out and what I need.
