Light Leak or film not sitting flat ? Hasselblad 501 CM / A12

This is what I see on my negatives across the frames/ negative. This is a blank shot (forgot to remove the front cap )
Would imply a light leak but found nowhere a similar phenomenon...
Film not sitting flat ?
Any ideas ?

Would you show a photograph of the negative including the edges please. That would help us diagnose the problem.

Sure ! see the attached those stripes go over all frames here the two blank ones but it continues on the correctly exposed frames across the entire negative

Did you process the film yourself, or did you send it to a lab for processing? Looks too consistent to be a light leak in camera, but I don't have a guess at what caused it.

How was this film developed? By hand, rotary machine?

That's a strange one. I can't see it as a light leak, light leaks on a Hasselblad magazine will generally manifest themselves from the long side of the film, as will "fat rolls." Looks like a film or processing issue. I am curious. Storage or radiation perhaps?

developed by a lab...now it's expired film forgot the expiry date, likely 2005

The expiration is probability not a major problem being 2005 and black and white. More important, where has this film been? Did it go through airport x-ray machines, was it cycled through hot and cold? You need to provide all the background info.

No idea I bought it a year ago stored it in a fridge since, yet what happened between 2005 or so and 2022 I have no clue.

That does not look like any light leak I've seen. I'm guessing X-Ray damage by the newer airport machines. I used to think that X-Ray damage showed up as wavy lines of increased exposure, but not so with the new scanners, apparently. See the Kodak page for examples. An excerpt from that page:

"Fog caused by the new baggage scanners is usually more pronounced than fog caused by other means. Fog from the CAT scan type of scanner typically appears as soft-edged bands 1/4 to 3/8 inch (1 to 1.5 cm) wide. The orientation of the fog stripe depends on the orientation of the film relative to the X-ray beam. The banding may be linear or wavy and can run lengthwise or horizontally on the film. It can also undulate, depending on the combination of the angle of exposure and the multiple laps of film on the roll."

+1, sure looks like some sort of scan.

I agree with the flow of this thread that the problem is not a light leak but a fogging problem possibly occurring at an airport.

If he is right, this expired 18 years ago and he has no idea how or where it was stored. My lab charges $23/roll for 120 dev’d and scanned. Crazy to spend that for 18 year out of date film.

To me this is garbage.

Thanks for your opinion which does not address the OP question though; I now know that there is no light leak which is what I wanted to know.

Meanwhile your dev / scan cost seem high I suggest you look for another lab.

Have you asked your lab for their assessment of the lines? It seems that they may have some insight. When my lab sees an anomaly in their final inspection they generally include a note acknowledging the potential cause.

On the cost issue, I don’t know where you got the idea that $23 is high for dev and scan b/w 120. And you did not mention what you are used to paying, or the name of the lab.

On the contrary, $23 is about average in the US. Here is another big lab located in California, Richard Photo Lab.

My experience with long out of date film that was abused is that you see blotches, pinholes, increased grain, and background fog. The film that Mr. Pope showed us has fuzzy linear stripes. I've used 2005 b&w film that was stored in decent conditions, and it looks pretty good. I think we have a different issue, not just aging.

I agree that the age of it isn’t the central issue.
