LF brass lens Shutter Mod-Suggestions?

I bought this on the bay awhile back..it looked so purty, covers 8x10 and about a 12" FL.

The shutter release is by touch with no cable mount.

So, my thoughts were to make/shape a small bracket to screw/glue onto side edge of shutter for the cable to fit in. Probably glue the cable into or look for a small nut to mount with.

Anyone modified one for a cable release or is there a store bought remedy?

Matt, just take your wife's turkey baster bulb and a piece of windshield wiper hose (for those of you born in the 1970's windshield wipers used to work with vacuum from the car's engine and had nifty small rubber hoses) and hook it up to the bottom of the piston on the left. Squeeze. Works like magic, and it's vibration free.

If you'd like to stay married, it might be best to leave the little lady's turkey baster alone!

Alternative: buy an infant (baby/child) nasal aspirator at the local pharmacy. Cram a piece of auto vacuum hose onto the end and secure with glue.

Mine works great, but the vacuum hose is a bit thick. I plan on replacing it with a piece of thinner walled tube one of these days.

p.s. back in the olden days, cars used vacuum to control the distributor also.

Just get an ordinary air release. Hub Photo, which sells Packard Shutters, or probably mpex.com should have them. Eventually you'll find yourself with a few shutters that need them.

Yup, and if the vacuum advance/retard came adrift, or the hose connector split, you were running on fixed timing. A few days ago I found out why my 1972 Land Rover was delivering 10-20% worse mileage than I expected after the new engine went in...

In theory...if you filled the empty void inside the cylinder up with a floating brass piston and tapped the air inlet at the bottom a good stout cable release with some throw should do the same job. It however would not look as cool as a bulb. Guys who shoot with bulbs are chick magnets.

Didn't the fact that it was idling at 2k RPM tip you off? The other pissy side-effect of leaky vacuum systems in cars. After fighting those problems for years I'm so very happy to be driving a fully digital automobile!

No, 'cos the timing was so far out you couldn't tell from that either! Besides, the old 2286cc LR engine can withstand (almost) any abuse.

Oh, here we go....only 8 posts in and out comes the D word. Only analog cars on APUG please. If it doesn't have points and condensor, we don't want to know about it.

Well, yes, I did wish I had one of those lovely levers on the steering wheel boss, like an old Rolls Royce, marked Early...Late. But I've never driven an older car than 1936 (MG TA) or an earlier 'bike than an SS80, probably 1935 or so.

I used to be a real man, and relatively strong too. That was in the olden days. Seventeen years of spending 2 to 3 hours per day commuting on the 405 (that's a very busy freeway, to those who don't know) had taken my manhood away and relegated me to life inside a newer, more reliable digi-car with... hold on to your socks... an automatic transmission. I might not be a "real man", but I LOOK GOOD in that car But I do have frequent cravings for a "real man's car" - a Model T Ford!

Sweet looking lens Matt, and I wish I had the answer about the cable release. Have an older Regno shutter with the same time of shutter release and would love to fabricate something to allow the use of a cable release. With the hole that is on these you have to figure there was a release of some type that was used at the time, but I have not found anything on it yet. Let me know if you do and promise to do the same for you.

If it has points and condensor, swap it for a diesel!

Blaze-on -- Don't modify that gorgeous shutter. A larger bracket that is clamped between shutter and lens board can easily be removed to restore the shutter to its original glory. A hose and bulb is the most authentic solution. Surgical tubing is neater than vacuum hose.

Another source for very flexible rubber tubing suitable for an air shutter release would be surgical tubing..most communities have surgical supply stores that carry the tubing in many sizes. Your shutter was actually designed to have the tubing and bulb as a shutter release. If you get several feet, you can do self-portraits.
