I think you're missing the point.

Some of us do things not because it'll end up good but just because we can do it. Most of my zany experiments never get out of my head and of those that I try near all fail. However, the few that work are amazing and even from the failures I'll take what I've learned and apply it to something else.

This guy wanted to make a film camera out of a Sony system. He got an image, that's a big win. At this point he can call it done or keep experimenting. Either way I would call it a major accomplishment.

I think for most people they would rather not tinker around with mediocre results, especially when you can still buy very high quality equipment off of eBay for $100. Equipment that will far exceed the specs of any of these homebrew devices. I am a bit of a tinkerer but I also like to shoot quality shots and not worry about my equipment so much. Having said that, there has always been a group of people making their own cameras. There will always be.

For some tinkerers results are secondary. Honestly I'm not one of them, if the end game is not something unique or amazing I don't really feel like investing time.
