Last night in the chatroom, Suzanne Revy, jnanian and I discussed the possiblity of another NE-APUG get together. I offered the use of the Valley Photo Center, here in Springfield, as a meeting placce. The possible dates for this was Sat. Nov 19 or Sun. Nov 20 (I forget which day they both thought was better).
We can meet and show each other our prints; figure out some place local to ply our photographic skills or just hang out and throw the bull about!
So how abouts it... anyone interested? Let me know by posting here.
I have meet a few of the NE-APUG'ers, but there are many more out there that I haven't have the pleasure of meeting.
Thanks in advance.

I'll probably be at the PHSNE show in Watertown on Saturday, helping my friend/mentor Dick Welch ply his wares (a great source for .... well, I'm not sure he even knows the extent of what he has!) I would suggest that anybody interested in cameras and in old images make this show -lots of dealers, wonderful conversations, piles of old images, old cameras and gear, new gear, film, and information.

Sunday is a possibility for a run to Springfield and I'd dearly love to see you folks again. Any interest in carpooling for the ride? Happy to drive if I can get the day off from the backlog of projects that threaten every once in awhile to overwhelm me.

Thanks, Gene! Keep this up, it's a great way for us to stay connected.
I tried to see Suzanne Revy's booth at the Groton Fest last weekend but the good folks of Groton decided that caution was in order and pulled a "rain date" on me. Sorry Suzanne

I'd be interested in carpooling (read that as: you do the driving please!).

Oh, Whitey!!! I'm sorry about the weather wimps in Groton. I hope you picked up some Lobster at the General store. Sunday was a much nicer day, but it never rained on Saturday!! (They really could have had it!)

It was busy, got my name out to a lot of local folks. Hope this next get together works out... it'd be great to see everybody! Either day, so far, works for me.

This is a little off-topic... I just found out that my daughter's game this Sunday has been cancelled (the other team could't get enough players to form a team) and I have a free day. I am itching to take the 5x7 for an outing at the Quabbin. So if anyone is interested, PM me. I am think of getting there about 10:30 am or so. I know it is rather short notice, but...
I'll be in NH tomorrow (Sat) for my niece's wedding, hoping to be back about 9:00pm or so.
With my daughter's game schedule, I gotta grab and take advantage of these opportunities.

Here's directions to the Quabbin. I'll be at the Visitor's Center about 10:30 am.

And now - Directions...
Coming from the Boston area / Eastern Mass:
Get on to the Mass Pike West and keep going... Look for Exit 7 Ludlow, this is the exit you want to take.
After paying your toll, go to the end of the short access road and turn RIGHT on to Rte 21 North. Follow this road all the way to the end (probably a 15 min drive) to where Rte 21 meets Rte 202. Turn RIGHT on to Rte 202 North. You will go about a mile, up a hill and at the top is a traffic light. Rte 202 turns left, BUT you want to go Straight through the light and about a mile it will meet Rte 9. Turn RIGHT on to Rte 9 East. The Quabbin Visitors' Center road will be about 2 to 3 miles down the road. It will be on the Left Side and marked with a sign for the State Police (who now police the park and area). Turn Left here and follow the road a short ways to the Visitors' Center. If I remember correctly, the parking area just past the Center is still accessible, if not park right in front of the building.

Coming from the West - Berkshires or NY:
Take the Mass Pike East to Exit 7 Ludlow. Follow the directs above from that point north.

Coming from the South - Conn:
Get on to Rte 91 North. Drive up to Springfield where you will bear right on to Rt2 291 East. Take Rte 291 East all the way to the end where it will meet the Mass Pike (Rte 90). Turn right on to the Pike's access area, grab you ticket and head East. Exit 7 will be the next exit, so don't pick up warp speed! Take Exit 7 Ludlow and follow the above directions to the Quabbin.

From points North - VT or NH:
Get on to Rte 91 South. Keep driving to Holyoke (pronounced Whole-yoke) and the Holyoke Mall (which is on your left). The Exit just past the Holyoke Mall is for the Mass Pike; this is the one you want to take. Get on to the Mass Pike and head East to Exit 7 Ludlow. As stated already, follow directions from this point to the Quabbin.

If you're gonna drive down Rte 2 - points North and East:
Take Rte 2 West until you hit the town of Orange. Take the exit for Rte 202 South Belchertown Amherst. Follow Rte 202 South into Belchertown where Rte 202 will meet Rte 9. Turn Left onto Rte 9 East and follow this road for about 3 to 5 miles to the Quabbin Visitors' Center (see above directions).

Great to hear that folks are doing a Quabbin run. I won't be able to make it due to an unexpected need to help run a table at the PHSNE photo show on Saturday and Sunday. I'll have a sign out that says APUG, however, so if anyone plans on being there, look for me.

Have fun! Good shooting.

PHSNE Photographica Show

The fall show to end all shows, in terms of used gear and interesting people anyway, in the Boston area is the PHSNE Photographica show. This year it's being held on November 19 and 20 at the Armenian Cultural and Educational Center in Watertown, MA. Directions are here. 11 to 5 on Saturday and 10 to 4 on Sunday

Dealers from all over converge twice a year for these shows, so there is an amazing array of used gear, antique and modern, as well as deals from places like Hunt Photo (at least they have been there for the last few years.) The cost of admission is $5. Tables are inexpensive if you wish to sell and may still be available - check with PHSNE. An older notice lists ebshaw@bu.edu as the email of choice for info. The place is different from the Waltham High School, where I have been at in the past, but I hear it's a great location. This is not a film-only show, but I haven't seen much in the way of fall-off for APUG types.

As I said, I'll be manning a table for much of the show, so I hope to meet a few APUGgers there. My mentor/friend has a lot of good used camera gear and is putting piles of it together for us to hawk in his name. Silly man went and had a 50th wedding anniversary in the middle of the show! Now that's unfortunate planning, huh?

By the way, if there's something you're looking for in terms of gear and you can't find it at the show, give me a nudge. Dick (my friend) may have it. He doesn't have much to do with computers and is often kind of difficult to track down, but he has three rooms filled with great stuff and is one of the nicest, most knowledgable most honest men in the world (kinda like Jim Galli, or so I'm led to believe.) I asked him last night about old rangefinders and folders and he just laughed, waving to a pile of large boxes about 6 feet high labeled "Folders." Kind of like a candy store for a old gear junkie like me.

See you there!

OK all... here's my thinking on this proposed get together: There are quite a few APUG'ers here in the New England region. We are not that far apart geographically. What I would like to see happen is for this region to become more active (like I don't have enough stuff going on already, but...) with general gatherings and photo-outings.
There are plenty of places in New England to ply our photo skills and we all have our faorite sites - hmmmm, I wonder where I would take you all to? Well, you know what I mean. And with Whitey and the his school, myself and the Valley Photo Center, and I am sure someone else has a good meeting site in another location, we have different places to have general gatherings and print viewings.
These are things I would like to see discussed at this proposed gathering. If Nov 19 & 20 are not good dates to get as many NE-APUG'ers together as possible, then lets try and find some other dates that are. I have the keys to the VPC, so it is available whenever I unlock the door.
Any suggestions - please post or PM me.
Thank you muchly.

Should we try to meet at this PHSNE show this time? Or move a meeting back to the weekend after thanksgiving, say the 3rd or 4th of December?

It'd be great to orgainize a regular schedule of meetings, maybe once every two months. As my recent thread noted, I sometimes feel like I'm floundering in work, and it'd be great to get regualr feedback from you guys... even some editing help on new work.

Thoughts??

Hi Suzanne and All!
I too was thinking that since a number of folks were committed to going to the PHSNE that we might as well meet there, it would be a longer drive for me, carpool anyone?, but I am game if that's what the group decides.

Also, if the concern/conflict is that we are meeting too close to Thanksgiving, then I'd vote to meet the weekend after Thanksgiving, at Valley Photo I presume, that works better for me personally, but again I will defer to what works for the group.

At this point my concern is that we haven't decided, and I have other commitments on hold because I am giving this one my priority, since I really really really want to meet you all!!!

Cheers, Krystyna

I'm late in answering this thread, but I'd love to meet up with you others in springfield... or any place. I'll be coming up (out?) from the cape and either day is ok with me.

Doing some shooting for an hour or so is great also. I mostly do architectural work so staying right in springfield is ok, also.

I'm also wondering if any new englander LF users are interested in meeting and/or forming some group/org to discuss/review/learn the various aspects of LF equipment. As I am also a MF user, all those interested could join in. Let me know. We could meet on the Cape or someplace more centralized. If there is already a group out there, please let me know about it.

Always willing to offer the classrooms where I teach. Large, easily reached from the highway and plenty of parking in scenic Belmont, MA. There are some venues for photography around here, but not many terribly exciting ones that I know off hand. Cambridge is right down the hill, however, and the T into Boston is a very short ways away. Large rooms and some equipment for lighting possible and lecture space aplenty. Perhaps a talk from someone and then a social hour or dinner? If we want to, we can plan something, but I'm a bit tied up at work to do all the planning right now.

The Moveable Feast Camera Club?

The Landau Gallery at the school next month will be hosting a photographer named Joe Schatz, and the work will run mainly to color (d*****l) landscapes. They are beautifully done.

The New England APUGgers Show will be here next September (probably starting in late August) and Papagene has kindly offered to help me curate it (didn't think I registered that, did you Gene?) I've got about 150 running feet of wall space with the possibility of a bit more. We're running ideas around about how the show might be structured. Always open for more. Thematic? Open? Silver only? Self printed only? What-have-you?

As I said in another post, I'll be at a table at at the PHSNE Photographica show in Watertown on the 19th and probably the 20th. If we wanted to meet up there or later I'd be up for it. At least stop by and introduce yourself if you come. I'll have a sign that says "APUG?"

OK, I have a few free moments right now... been busy at the Valley Photo Center setting up the Int'l Assoc of Panorama Photography exhibit, having a bad cold and my father being in the hospital (on top of a regular 40 hour/week job).
So let's make it Dec 3rd or 4th at the VPC. Those are better dates for me any way, now. Let me know what day is best and we'll go from there.
Man... I could right a book on "How Not to Turn Your Work in for an Exhibition!"
GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR!!!
