Hey,
Apart from the Schneider lens who else has something that will cover 16x20. I like the look of the 550 xxl however the price is the issue. Any suggestions please

Goertz Red dot Artar could be an option 24" and longer should cover 16x20 and they are not too hard to find and cheap in comparison to the XXL lenses

hi pat, you didn't suggest if you'd mind oldish designs ..

probably a longish verito ( 14.5 or 18" ) with the element removed.
its based on a rapid rectalinaer design so stopped down is sharp.
one of reinhold's wollaston meniscus lenses in a barrel w/waterhouse stops will probably cover it too
they cost much less than the other lenses mentioned , have a large image circle, and stopped down can be pretty un-diffuse/soft.

Pat,

What do you like to photograph?
Adams type landscapes? Cityscapes? Junkyards and fire hydrants? Portraits?
Do you prefer precision and punch in your photos? Then get a modern(ish) lens.
Are you intrigued by the understated and indefinate? Get a meniscus lens.
Can't decide? Get both types, you'll never regret it.

As John suggests, a meniscus in a longer focal length is quite adaptable.
Wide open they have a lovely glow without breaking down into mush.
Stopped down they have a nice classic, mellow nature.

Here's an example of a 500mm meniscus aimed at a dirty kitchen sink:
(there was a url link here which no longer exists)
Even at wide open it has nice atmosphere without going "wild".

Don't count on a 24" process lens covering 16x20. The fuji 600 compact is said to be able to cover 16x20.

calculation using 48 degrees coverage and 25.6" diagonal coverage requirement gives a minimum focal length of approximately 29". So go for a 30 inch lens minimum. This is no movements at infinity too. Be conservative. Don't skimp on coverage. There is no point in going big if your lens will crop to a smaller format with dark corners.

perhaps look for some longer protar 7 cells that are "less than pristine" if you're on a budget. If you're "on the cheep" you can't to wrong with one of reinhold's lenses in my opiinion. Get the 1000mm one if you go that route--be conservative.
