The founder of the company was Ernst Leitz, Leitz made optical devices that he put his name on, e.g. Leitz Microscope. Then an employee of his. Oscar Barnack. made a camera. it was a little camera, but Leitz did not name it Little he named it after the company, Leitz, LEItz CAmera. No phony etymology needed. Geneology of surnames is rarely as easy as the etymology of a given word.

AgX, this is not an academic game. This is Dunning-Kruger in action.

Mike, reality has nothing to do with this discussion.

Haha, yes, Dunning-Kruger is all over the place, all the time, but nobody cares.
Besides that some countries have a reputation of changing historical facts

... I wonder what the origin of the word "Dutch" is. Maybe the OP........
Regards,
Frank

from Dictionary.com : what about the Dutch

Now, what about the Dutch? There are three terms we need to define: Holland, the Netherlands, and Dutch. In Old English dutch simply meant “people or nation.” (This also explains why Germany is called Deutschland in German.) Over time, English-speaking people used the word Dutch to describe people from both the Netherlands and Germany. (At that point in time, in the early 1500s, the Netherlands and parts of Germany, along with Belgium and Luxembourg, were all part of the Holy Roman Empire.) Specifically the phrase “High Dutch” referred to people from the mountainous area of what is now southern Germany. “Low Dutch” referred to people from the flatlands in what is now the Netherlands. Within the Holy Roman Empire, the word “Netherlands” was used to describe people from the low-lying (nether) region (land). The term was so widely used that when they became a formal, separate country in 1815, they became the Kingdom of the Netherlands. The word “Holland” literally meant “wood-land” in Old English and originally referred to people from the northern region of the Netherlands.

who cares ? monkeys ... sized country. 1 million of them lives on i phone programming , 1 million lives on agriculture , others lives on bloody diamonds , painting fake monets . not a democracy , still have an king queen. All european youths visit there for heroin every weekend. Real money comes from illegal killer drug trade. Now , You know what I mean ?

I'm sorry, did I offend you with the changing history remark? Hoped you had some sense of humour, but should have known better. Anyway your reaction shows where you stand.

Talking about the drug scene, if you really knew how this works, you would not have mentioned it. The people and gangs who control this come from a certain country between Europe and Asia. That is where the money goes.
Beside that, your information is outdated. Amsterdam may have the name but nowadays a lot of places in the world are far ahead of "us" in legalizing soft drugs.

But to get on topic again, I agree with the rest of the world that Leica comes from Leitz Camera.

Frank

I tried to go in to deep cultural roots of brand making. If these people created a camera 100 yeras ago which is still better than all other camera optics of today and if we know the culture of these people , it would not suprise me that they had been looked to a small gothic dictionary and matched with ernst leitz camera , lets make it leica and leika means in gothic astonishment , lei means small... I think all the post owners could not see one point , they did not create the leica name from gothic , they created together with gothic or may be other languages IU dont know

The Leitz company has a long history in inventing names. Before the internet Leitz distributers had to order products using a telegraph message. Since telegrams are charged by the word Leica devised a list of invented code words for various Leitz accessories. So you will see words like BECOS, WOOLD, and WINTU. There are dozens, probably hundreds, of these words why not the ultimate one Leica. Trying to find some connection with this name with some obscure Teutonic word is a rather pointless endeavor. Applying Occam's Razor tells us Leica is derived from 'Leitz' plus 'camera'. BTW you will find lists of the code words on the net.

Was there any petit camera, apart from Leica that took a fixed lens then?

I am impressed by the size of Agfa Optima 1535/1035/535/335.

Am I the only one here who feels unpleasantly touched by this stupid and disrespectful trash talk ?
