Hello all,

I am in the process of buying a Leica M3 + DR 50mm Summicron from LeicaShop in Vienna, Austria. I'm very excited about my new purchase.

Should i need to have the camera or lens serviced at any point, is there anyone in Australia that can do this? Or would i be better off sending it to the USA/UK to one of the well known service techs (or to Leica in Germany??)

I did a quick google search but did not get anything of use.

I called around to get my M3 CLA'd. Found 3-4 big companies willing to do it for $300 and take 4-6 weeks. Ended up sending it off to Youxin, fixed for $100 and back to me within a week.

try Charlie Woodhouse in QLD - he's pretty good with mechanical rangefinders...

If I recall my last few conversations with Charles he only worked on LTM models - didn't touch M series - and he was giving up on camera repairs and working on antique firearms restoration.

Mainline Photographics in Crows Nest (Sydney) have a technician and you could also try Adeal in Melbourne who are the Leica agents.

But there are also several reputable repairmen/women in the USA who can be found through "that other forum".

Paul Jose is a specialist Hasselblad tech in Sydney, but I think he does Leica. Very good service and fair prices in my experience.

Try Mainline, although I'm not sure if their guy works on M cameras. Something about difficulty with parts I seem to recall. He is a German & Leica factory trained. Semi-retired & does these Mainline repairs part time. He has a good reputation. When I needed some work on my M6 & Mainline weren't doing them they recommended CES in Perth.

I also don't know whether the Mainline guy does M cameras, but he did a quick and very reasonably priced job on my Copal shutters. Worth an enquiry.

you could also try The Camera Exchange in Melbourne - Vic Plant works there - he was the camera service manager for Adeal and knows Leicas inside out..

I second Andrew K, Vic plant at The Camera Exchange. Ben Vang at Camera Checkpoint in Dubbo does all my camera servicing, great work....never tried him with a Leica though.

Leica M9 repairs

Recently my quite new Leica M9 fell down on concrete, due to a broken "Vintage" leather strap. Besides lots of scratches and abrasions with all the electronics and shutter still perfectly working ,the rangefinder was heavily misaligned vertically and horizontally. I brought the camera to Chris Wong -Whilton Camera Service- in 251 Elizabeth Street, Sidney. The very friendly Mr.Wong made the repairs the same day including check up and cleaning for 250 $ AUS. So I could proceed with my round the world tour and the camera worked perfectly. Praise to Leica and to Mr. Chris Wong
