It was a birthday gift actually.
Why no engraving? I'd have mine in chrome with engraving.
I am 20 percent jealous and 80 percent disgusted! Kind of like when I see a beautiful Ferrari on the road, but then actually think about the fact that someone spend more money than I'll make in 20 years on that car just to drive it in stop and go traffic on the 101, passing thousands of hungry homeless people on the way to wherever it is he/she is headed.

2F/2F - I'd be 100% disgusted seeing someone photographing said homeless people with even a crappy camera in order to get gritty street pics and exploit them.
I was out shooting this weekend and was hit up by two homeless women. Instead if ignoring them or telling them I couldn't help I bartered with them. Photos for money. And since I only had about 36 cents in my pocket I told them I was going to the store and would be back.
They had heard that before... But when I did come back they had moved and were surprised to see me. they got 2 bucks each for a minute if work, so I think they were happy. And I talked to them, know their names, know why they are on the streets and was a dare example of human kindness in our brief encounter.
While I've never been in their shoes, I have been down to a few dollars in the bank before finding a job. And now I'm in a situation that for some reason inspires disgust? I don't get it.

I think my feelings and point were stated pretty clearly, and you must have expected at least one person to have something like them when you decided to post the way you did. If you don't get it, then you don't get it. It's OK.

Lets be fair here. Any of us - given different parents, different situations, etc - could have very different lives where the idea of owning a camera at all is a luxury. Glass houses and all.
We all know people who spend more money on cars/houses/shoes/etc than we could fathom. Spending more than $200 on anything is a major challenge, irrational as it is knowing that it may be something I could use for 50+ years.

Why be pissy? The OP bought a desirable camera, and wanted to show it to us. It's his money. None of us are above reproach-we could all be giving our money to a cause more important than ourselves. We could be buying clothes and groceries for impoverished children or something like that instead of spending it on film and cameras.
How is it that here on APUG a person buys a brand new film camera and someone else starts passing judgment on them for it? There's a very clear implication that the OP was somehow wrong to buy the camera, and even more wrong to post about it.
I've seen the Ferraris (and Lamborghinis, etc.) on the 101 or whatever, and I always think it looks kind of silly, a misapplication of the machine, and a gaudy display of wealth. But I would never go up to the owner, and start telling them that. I don't feel the need to shove my opinions at them, and consider it in poor taste to judge them publicly, no matter my opinions.
I don't feel like the OP slapped us in the face with it- it's routine around here for people to show their latest purchase. Maybe he gave up a lot to be able to afford it. Maybe he saved for years, or this is the one thing he's going to get for himself after a lifetime of providing for others. For years, I preferred to spend my money on photography rather than have a new car, and was accused of being self-indulgent for it. I thought it was absurd to spend $1000+ on some fancy wheel and trim package the car dealer was pushing, while others didn't bat an eye at that.

What gives you the right to judge someone you don't know ? Just to kill his pleasure after he bought his camera ? Or just for you to feel better ?

A very nice camera indeed, but I would rather have another M2 body. 
The M7 is a bit outrageous in price, but then everything else from Leica is out of this world. Enjoy your new toy.

I too struggle with my path at times. But my intention wasn't to cause harm to anyone here or the less fortunate. I do think that great cameras deserve purchase and use. If my post would have involved a 40 year old TLR that I acquired, I'm sensing there would have been less if any negativity involved.
In defense of 2F/2F - he is certainly entitled to his opinion. He is an active contributor and, with rare exception, tends to comment well. I don't think this little thread will change his mind, but I do encourage him to be a bit more open minded and to consider whether negative comments have any constructive value. Rephrasing an opinion to invoke thoughtful discussion is usually of more value.
Perhaps we can all work together to make this world a better, happier place!

The camera is beauuutiful alright, but what about the lens? Personally I love this lens' smallness and stealthiness (I don't own one). Does it live up to your expectations, being only from the 'el-cheapo' (no offence!) Leica line?
What made you choose this one over the ASPH f/2, for example? Price? Weight? Performance?

I would find vulgar a Ferrari (Lamborghini, Maserati etc.) that is bought just for driving in the city centre. That would show that the real intention of the buyer is just to show off his wealth (a human, but not really commendable behaviour).
On the other hand if you buy such car because you actually drive it on the track 10 times a year, than you do if compelled by your passion for cars and for driving, and if you are wealthy and can afford a Ferrari, that's so much better not just for you, but for the community as a whole, as this world would lose something if those cars ceased to have a market.
By the same token, if one bought a Leica just because his wallet is fat, and use it just to take 2 birthday rolls a year and sport in front of his relatives how rich he his, then I would consider that man quite poor at heart. If somebody is passionate about photography, like the OP and anybody else in this forum, then in buying this camera and putting it at good use he would not just do what I would have done had I had the money, but also helped a struggling firm to survive and an entire important piece of photography to remain alive.
So I am glad there is people still buying Leicas, and I am glad they buy them not as status-symbols but as tools of our beloved craft. And I do believe the that OP wanted to share with us his enthusiasm for the newborn baby and not brag about being able to afford it.

-Amen to that. I really, really hope to get hold of a nice M7 somewhere down the line (My M3+MR is nice, but there's a lot to be said for TTL metering and aperture priority!)
What is most fascinating about the a-la-carte concept is that they get away with actually charging more to do less (ie. leaving the engraving out sets you back an additional US$200 or so, IIRC (Yes, I've spent way too much time looking at different M7 configurations...)

Fortunately I was able to spend lots of money on equipment in the past.
And I'm sure I will in the future, being as I have several Alpa lenses waiting
to snuggle up to a beautiful Alpa camera body. At the moment I enjoying
going to all the local thrift shops and buying all the $5.00 cameras available.
And actually found the Alpa lenses at a thrift shop, and hoping to find more
sweet surprise in the future. As long as we are all buying film, and having fun,
that's all that really matters. I hope you have lots of film, and fun !
