I have a Leica M1 that has been masked down to a 33X22 format size. Does anyone have any idea why this would have been done? Was this an option that Leica offered? I'd like to hear any ideas that you may have.

Does it take regular 35mm film?

Yes, it is a standard Leica M1. I looked at it again last night and gave it a little pull and the mask pop out. The glue was old and it came out easily. The mask is very nicely machined with a lip on the inside to help secure it.

Sometimes M1 cameras were used by post offices or similar government agencies for small scale reproduction. It might have been some sort of standard size for a reproduction image they wanted. Or it could have been used in a scientific setting. M1 were used in all sorts different ways. If it has any official markings on it, it may have an increased value. You might post a picture of it on the Photo.net Leica board to see if anyone overthere has more information.

Perhaps the folks at LUG, Leica Users Group, will know.
