I have a shutter curtain with one segment that is dried out. Instead of replacing the whole curtain, is there any way to coat the bad section so it is light tight?

Thank You,
Jesse

Fixed a FED2 shutter with black textile paint from a craft shop. Just make sure that you let it dry overnight before you fire the shutter.

Having said that, if the cloth part of the shutter needs that kind of attention, gearing for the shutter probably needs some attention as well. If you search this forum for "leica repair" you will find a several recommendations for people who can do a CLA on your camera.

Not necessarily true: The condition of the cloth often depends on exposure to light (in this case only one curtain being bad, depending on whether the previous owner(s) left it cocked or uncocked).

In old Exaktas (SLRs with non-returnable mirrors), the bad curtain is almost always the second, left exposed to light when the mirror remained up.

While black paint/laquer can be a good temporary job, in the long run a curtain replacement is better.

At least overnight and dont do anything to the winder or release...
Save money while the fabric paint holds off the evil day.

A IIIf is different from a Fed, buying another Fed may be cheaper than fixing.

I did the "paint" repair on my own camera yesterday, and shot a roll of film with it this morning to see how it worked. So far the results look okay, the holes (many of them) appear to be sealed.

But this is only a temporary fix, I ordered a new set of shutter curtains last night. Installing them is not too difficult, the old Leicas are simple enough machines. You only need a few basic tools, a steady hand, and some patience.
