How much of a gap is allowable or safe when the top plate is fully installed and the red cap is tightened on all the way?

are you saying there is a gap between the body and body cover? I have several Lloyd (earlier ones before Legacy Pro) and there is no gap that I remember-though I can double check this evening if you like. Sounds like yours is warped or something.

Something is keeping the cap from going tight if there's a gap between the cover and the loader body. Look for an old roll core that's over length or has a washer or spacer on top, or something similar preventing the cover from fully seating.

If you can (I don't recall if the red knob is captive), try removing the red knob and checking if the cover will seat without it.

on mine the red plate is not captive and will fly off if I spin it too fast while unloading it.

I'd remove the film, and in daylight, reassemble to see if anything is obstructing and how much gap if any is there when assembled with no film.

Its mainly around the little compartment that the film cartridge sits in when the film cartridge is being loaded with film inside a light tight compartment.

We don't upload files that large. Resize it smaller - 1000 pixels on the longest size and jpeg - and it will upload fine and look good on a 1920 x 1080 or smaller screen.

So this is the door over the cartridge that has a gap, or the crank isn't inserting correctly?

the SIDE PLATE that is held on by the big red screw cap..

That has the gap all around the compartment you insert the empty film cassette into, and down the end with the winding to film frame estimate label, and along the bottom.

Its worse along the top edge of the film cassette door. That itself has some damage to where the crank shaft goes through it to hold things locked in place.

I'm not picturing this (I'm much more familiar with the Watson/Weston type loaders, only have one Lloyd). Cell phone photos (appropriately resized. 1000 pixels on the long side) are welcome here as troubleshooting aids...

Ii have an old Lloyd's loader with what may be a similar gap. It leaks just enough light to partially fog the 3d from the end image on rolls I load in daylight. As a result, I usually just use the loader in a changing bag (which kind of defeats the purpose of a daylight loader). The gap around the edges doesn't seem to cause a problem, but the gap located in the compartment the cannister goes in does cause problems.

If you have loaded the loader, try shooting a roll to see if there are problems. If you haven't loaded this device, I would think twice about using this. I have several Lloyd's type loaders and all but the defective one have a negligible gap.

since it sounds like the gap issue is not the main body or cover, but in the area where you insert the cartridge--just do a test--load a cartridge with 5 frames and do it in bright light. Don't shoot the roll, just go in the dark room load it in your dev tank, and develop it as normal. The ~1 inch taped to the spool should come out plack, and the inch or so tongue you left exposed should also be black, but everything else should be clear except for edge numbering.

i spent 120 on 100' of film. Im not going to use the laoder till i can get some input from freestyle.

emailed them photos, before noon, no input by end of business day.

They are going to send a replacement. SO much for hoping to get going with some shooting this weekend.

got my replacement, seems that SOME of the issues are truly caused by the poor design of the mold block and its gate system.

all the sprues are on the surface of the removable plate, and the little door , and on the edge they meet together and to the body.
