Lee/Cokin Filter

I have already 4x6 Lee Grad. ND filters. Since these were so large, I never bought a holder. But now I'm thinking of getting some B&W resin filters(yellow 8 and eventually a red 25). A couple questions? I have already some older glass 55mm thread size #8 and 25. I only have one lens, a 58mm thread size 180mm lens, so was wondering if for time being, would I have any vignetting using these older filters on my lens? If I need to buy some new ones, what size of the resins should I buy? 3x3 ($11), or 4x4($58)? And lastly, and I'm surprised how expensive they are ($110), would I need to also buy the holder for these smaller ones? The 4x6's were not difficult to hold in place, but not sure about the smaller sizes.

I use gelatin filters from Calumet. I am thinking of getting the 4x4 filters and get the cardboard holders for the filters. I would store them in a small 4x5 film box when not in use. I would hold them in front of the lens with one hand and operate the cable release with the other. In fact I am going to order them right now. Thanks for reminding me.

I'd just get 58mm filters. Sounds like that would fit your lens. You might get away with using the smaller filters. The thing to check is how big is the front element. I have a nikon that I swear the filter ring is twice the size of the glass. Try it and see. Only way to know for sure.

One other thing is to watch ebay for the sort of filter holder that is in the Simmons book. Something like this one.

Takes 3x3 filters. Personally I get the feeling just using screw in filters is easier but if you've got multiple lens with different sizes.

Thanks Aggie for the offer. I may take you up on that. I, for some reason I don't know, have an older Cokin 77mm threaded holder that 3.25" wide (maybe that's what 3" actually are?) that rotates 360. But I don't have any filters that fits it...lol Don't ask cause I don't know hehe

So are these 3x3" filters large enough for a variety of lenses? Maybe I can find the stats of lense width online. As it seems you just need to be sure the filters wider than the front element?

Good find Robert, I'll keep an eye on something like that if I need the larger 4x4 holder. But I'm thinking like Lee, and maybe just holding in front of the lens for ease of use. The screw ins are spendy for a decent one. The gels seem more affodable and pack up flatter as well. Just something to think about.

Boy, alot of info at Schneideroptics.com! Indeed, the Super Angulon 90 is 100mm/3.9 something inches. So a 4" is needed here. Good to know.

The one in the ebay ad is for 3x3". If complete it should have a shade. The problem with this holder is it's limited to lens with an outside of 75mm [not the filter thread but the outside] and it will only use one filter at a time. I picked up one awhile back out of a junk bin. I bet 1000 people had handled it before me-) Works fine within the limits. OTOH I've got a few lens that are too big for it. Right now it's sitting next to the enlarger for the times I need to use a contrast filter.

The Lee Gelsnap kits sound like good value. The B&W one is I think $60. Includes the holder and four filters. A yellow,orange,red [maybe two yellows?] The holder is limited the same way the one above is. But it fits lens up to I think 82mm. Some people have mentioned that it doesn't work well with lens that are too small. These are 4x4 filters.

The screw in aren't really more expensive. Well if you avoid the really fancy names. Hoyas aren't very expensive. Worse you could buy them from Canada and save a bit. The problem is getting them to fit different lenses.

You might be able to mount your filters on the back of the lens.

I use some Cokin filters in the "P" size (that's the 4" size I think) and they work for all three of my lenses (a 90 and a 210 that have 67mm threads and a 150 that's smaller). The P size holder will work for Singh-Ray and Lee filters also.

I use both Cokin "P" (for the Hasselblads) and "A" (for 35mm) filters. The "P" size filter itself measures 3.25" x 3.25". The factor limiting use would be the inside diameter of the Cokin adapter. The 60mm Bay adapter for the Hasselblads has an I.D. of 2.5" ... and I con't see where there could be enough room, using the "P" size, to go more than 2.75" - 70mm.

Other manufacturers make adapters - filter holders - for 4" x 4" filters - a good source of information would be the Calumet catalog.
