This system is designed to be modular. You can mount the shade directly on the lens, mount the filter holder only on the lens, or mount the filter holder + shade on the lens.

With the appropriate adapter ring, you can use this on a wide variety of lenses for either film or digital bodies. If the exact adapter ring isn't available (say, for old smaller diameter lenses), you can thread a step down ring into one of the adapters.

I doubt I have used this a half dozen times since I bought it. Everything is in 9+ condition.
