I do hope the ISP has not suspended their account because of some addle minded complaints by people who live outside of reality.

I take issue with his comment "most manuals cost me anywhere from $32 to $150.00US,". Many of his downloads have come from other sites, including mine where you can download them for free. I asked him to, at least, credit me with supplying them (he just took them without asking) as 'I' was the one who bought them and spent hours scanning them and creating PDFs but, no, he refused and he still sells the manuals he got from my site for free. If you want repair manuals, it's worth doing a search first because many of the manuals are available elsewhere for free. And if you're looking for Contax or Yashica manuals, try my site first.

What a shame; I hope this gets resolved. Pate's site, for me, has been extremely useful and I didn't mind when he started asking a dollar for a download. The dollar quickly returned a lot of valuable information. Definitely not a scam of any kind.

As to sources, this is the wild-West internet and materials seem to move from here-to-there without attribution or compensation. It's a shame but that's the risk of putting anything in publication, traditional or virtual. I always hope for "academic honesty" but not everyone has an academic attitude. Perhaps that is why one of the other manual providers marks his offerings up with his name - old school, with a pencil.

The advise to do a comprehensive search for source material is wise for all research pursuits. It will likely yield much more than a dollar savings!

In my retirement, I plan on scanning and posting a huge amount of motion picture technical information on Archive.org for free access.

I have already wrestled and come to terms with the certainty that others will download and repackage the material for sale or other profit making ventures, but to me it is more important that the information survive and be available for reference than to police what others do with it.

I too hope this can be resolved amicably to both parties satisfaction, as they are both extremely valuable resources for our community.

He posted on Facebook that the hosting outfit had a distributed denial of Service attack fousted upon them. At the time I was supposed to be back up.

as for his talking about the cost of the manuals, some sellers treat them like Cherished antiques. I found a manual in another field the other week, for a gaget that was about 40 dollars NEW 40 yaers ago. the paper manual was on an auction at a starting bid of 100 bucks.

Gene WANTS to keep folks knowing how to fix cameras so he charges a buck a manaual for a PDF copy. with the PayPal fees he gets about 30 cents of that. But he may very well have to pay 30 or 40 bucks to get a clean copy to scan. we metioned one manual where he was picking and chosing from two copies to try and get a complete file that did not have too many Pencil in notes.
