Leaking thermometer fitting

I have two of those old Flo Temp thermometer wells. Remember those? One does not leak. The other one, um, does. I have usually had pretty good success with the teflon tape in the connections, but that doesn't seem to be doing it on this one. No cracks or anything, just leaks. The leaks are where the metal fittings screw onto the plastic body. It is not the faucet connection or where the thermometer stem enters the fitting (the usual spot). A few drops and it leaks into the sink, so no real problem, just annoying.

Anybody have a suggestion? My next thought is to try silicon sealer, but I thought I'd see if anyone had had some success with something else.

I think your silicon sealer is a good idea for this type of a leak. I haven't had much luck with other sealers for similar use although I am not familiar with the equipment that you have the problem with....Good Luck!

An old plumber once told me that Teflon tape WITH pipe thread compound is virtually foolproof.

Are you sure the stem is not leaking, that seems to be a frequent trouble area. I used some silicone tubing around the stem and teflon paste on the threads. Holding for about ten years now.

I agree. I wouldn't use Silicone, has poor adhesion pain to work with . Get some pipe dope and use a lot of thread tape. It should seal.
