I’ve used a lead retriever plenty and it usually works. When I have trouble I’ve also wet the end of another film strip and used that to pull the lead out.

Neither of these methods are getting the lead out. I can see the film cartridge spinning for a little but I lose hold of the lead right before it comes out.

Does anyone know what’s going wrong?

I put a piece of double-sided tape on a narrow piece of 4x5 film. Stick the taped end of the 4x5 film into the cassette, wind the cassette backwards until it sucks the piece of 4x5 film into the cassette a ways, then pull the 4x5 film out...in theory, with the 35mm film attached!

Great to hear, but Trix is for kids... 😎

I used this method for a couple decades retrieving leaders for students. Bought a couple of different types of retrievers, but always went back to this homemade version. I would use it for 5 to 10 rolls of film before having to renew the tape.
