I'm glad to see the Portfolio paper updated. The double weight substrate is very nice to work with, and probably the most durable print material available, for any prints that may end up being handled a lot.

Is the base color of the new portfolio paper the same as the base color of the 5th gen MGRC paper?

Congratulations on bringing out new paper.

I have seen this paper and prints look awesome. The deeper blacks and double weigth make them feel so similar to FB paper than it can fool not very experience people like me in B/W. The gap between FB and RC paper seems now much narrower with this new addition.

Does anyone know the current expectations for archival life of this generation of RC papers?
I'd hazard a guess of no on Photrio. Is there any reason to believe that this emulsion has any longer a life than MGIV? Certainly not one of Ilford's claims and if it has longer archival life then I would have thought that Ilford might have included that in its announcement.

However does anyone including Ilford know what the preceding MGIV had in terms of archival life? I fear not. Only time will tell. How long have you got on this Earth to see what happens? I don't have long enough but this may not apply to you

Try asking Ilford and then when the answer arrives, tell us what it says and then set up a thread on archival properties of RC paper. We'll know when that discussion is reaching its useful end when the Mods sent it to the Soapbox :D

I’m excited for this paper. I always liked the weight of the MGIV version of portfolio by wasnt as crazy about the emulsion. Was hoping they would update this, glad to see they are and I will certainly try some of it. Well done Ilford!

I see it’s only available in pearl. I do like pearl, but would like to see glossy too.

This is the weight of the Post Card stock. Even if we have it in the EU post card size. There's probably 2 million US size post card easels out there, 3 1/2" Ă— 5 1/2 " , (well a million in the US on Ebay ). I've managed over the years to find 1 4x6 speed easel to fit the Ilford post card paper.

Hopefully there's a new post card 100 sheet boxes of this new paper available.

I like the option of having this option. As far as archival, that's more how you process the stuff.

The US Postal service standard for postcards is up to and including 4" x 6", which is why I print mine that size - pre-Covid I would save a significant amount of money by mailing my US and other non-Canadian destination cards through the USPS (I live 13 blocks from a border crossing).
I print three 4"x6" cards on to an 8"x10" sheet - one single card on a 4"x8" portion, and two cards on a 6"x8" portion.
The Canada Post office standard is larger, so I can, if I wish, send up to a 6"x8" card (approximately), bot the postage is over 80 cents CDN - same as a letter.

Yeah, everything's changed. I love the vintage contact print Azo postcards. When I was in my 20's a buddy and I cut up 11 X14 Azo, into 8, 3 1/2 Ă— 5 1/2 cards, he had a small letter press and he printed the backs. He had people buy the cards.

I was hoping for MGRC in double weight, so this is great news.

I just had a session last night printing on the old Postcard paper, but am really looking forward to this new edition. Hopefully we'll have it here in Japan sooner rather than later.

I'm pretty sure I still have at least 100 sheets of this paper too. It has aged so it's time for a bit of benzotriazole in the developer... gotta reduce a bit of that age induced paper fog.

It doesn't seem to available from any main dealers here in the UK yet, in fact where they all listed the old portfolio it has been out of stock for so long that most of thgem don't even list the MG4 portfolio, so 3 days after this big launch not around anywhere

Saw that late this afternoon, but not yet available, only advance orders, and the price makes it just about, in some cases more expensive than the FB classic, at that price I would rather get Classic,

Don't forget that there are markets where water usage is (and may become more of) an issue and that may be part of Ilford's marketing aims for this paper.

I might try it for my big prints. Since I make the big prints for exhibition, archival is not as important. The ease of processing large prints with RC paper is a major motivating factor

Double weight RC papers are likely to be the most resistant to physical damage of any paper out there.
When you are considering longevity, that may be as important as anything.
Modern RC papers are durable and long lasting.
