I know that Borax is disodium tetraborate (decahydrate) and that Kodalk is sodium metaborate.

Is Kodalk the 4-mole or the 8-mole metaborate?

This page claims Kodalk is the octahydrate. Check out (there was a url link here which no longer exists), too.

How does one know if it is 4-mole or 8-mole? Looking at Photographer's Formulary, for example, they simply list the chem as sodium metaborate, no further information. More broadly, is there a qualitative difference between the two?

Photo Formulary provides an MSDS on their product page, which states that their Sodium Metaborate product is also the 8-mole version.
