Hello,

I was gifted a box of Kodak Vericolor III film. It's 50 count and it's 4x5 film. If it expired in '98 but has been kept in a refridgerator what is this worth?

Thanks
Joe

Try it. With 50 from one batch, you can shoot a few sheets at different rates, develop differently, etc and see if you can pull something up to your standards out of it.

I've been shooting 120 film from the 50s and 60s - mostly 100 and 400 speed film rerated to 50 and 100 respectively - without many issues. I've been developing in HC110 to minimize the base fog but otherwise treating it normally.

Alternatively, offer it here to someone and I'm sure you find a taker quickly. If i shot 4x5 I'd take it off your hands in a heartbeat.

Edit: I should note that most of my expired film was black and white. It was supposedly refrigerated but who knows how many hands it has passed through in the last 50 years.

Before you shoot it, be sure you have the proper final chemical for it, or it will not be very archivally sound. It should be called "Stabilizer," not "Final Rinse" for this film.

It should work pretty well if pulled by 1/3-2/3rds of a stop (Box speed is ISO 160). I've shot a half-dozen rolls of it in 120 with similar expiry dates. It was the predecessor of Portra 160, colour response is similar to 160NC, with a little bit more punch.

It was the predecessor of Pro 100, PRN. Portra replaced the Pro line. In any case, Vericolor was spectacular film. I'm jealous.

PRN did not replace Vericolor III.

VPSIII was in fact discontinued at the same time as PRN in 1997, with Portra 160VC as the official replacement for PRN while 160NC replaced VPSIII.

100UC (originally a Portra Film) was the real replacement for PRN, as Portra VC's never had the saturation or contrast of PRN or PPF.

I think you mean overexposed, not pulled.

Here's a question - is Kodacolor Stabilizer (RA-4) usable in place of the Flexicolor Stabilizer (C-41)?

I do not know. You could call Kodak and ask. You need something with bona-fide formalin in it, I believe.
