Dan,

Not that it really matters what he did, but I seem to remember A. Adams saying that he rinses before and after the HCA, then starts a timed wash.

I expect Adams went through at least several work flows
during his near 60 years of darkroom work. KHCA and KRST
came out in the 50s if I'm not mistaken. His practice of
mixing KRST with KHCA was somewhat of a secret
twixt himself and Kodak. Dan

One needs to be aware of AA's materials if following his fix routine. I believe his old books discussed using slow sodium thiosulfate for extended fix times no longer required with modern methods. The fixer of choice for most photographers is ammonium thiosulfate rapid fixer. When we communicate we interchange the terms fixer/hypo/thiosulfate. Yet there is considerable variation between products.

I fix fibre paper for 60s using a single bath of TF-4, an alkaline fixer. I toss the fix after 10 to 12 8x10s. I avoid the build up of complex silver/sulfur compounds which lowers permanence. Prints go into a water hold tray with many water exchanges until the end of the DR session. I process finished prints in a hypo clear for 10min and wash for 25. I avoid a two tray line as I don't have the room and my print volume is low enough not to worry about cost.
