Kodak Safelight filters

Can anyone tell me whether the Kodak safelight filter OB is ok for black + white printing?.....

I tried looking this up a few months ago and could find everything but OB ....OC and OA were there plus others. I have just tried again to make sure darkroom madness wasn't creeping in but can't get on the site

The online publication "Kodak Safelight Filters" (TI0845} has graphs for 14 filters but no OB. The older and very comprehensive paper book "Kodak Filters for Scientific and Technical Uses" (B-3) has graphs for 18 safelight filters but still no OB. My copy is the 3rd edition from 1981.

Andy, could this be a really old filter? Perhaps if someone has the first edition of B-3, it might have the info, or an older edition of the CRC Handbook.

Probably OB is in between OA and OC in its properties. The shapes of the transmittance curves are similar for the OA and OC filters. The OA filter transmits more light in a broad band around 600 nm than does the OB. If the OA is suitable for your paper, then probably the OB will be. But as always, you should test, because it depends on your specific setup. And if the filter is used, it might be faded.

Sorry, I just assumed it was there.

I went back and cannot get to the safelight filter page at kodak.com and my old wratten filter book does not included this filter either. When I try a search on the Kodak web page all my searches come up blank.

I'll keep looking and if I find anything, I'll pass it on.

The OB was the old standard Kodak filter for graded paper. The OC has a more limited spectrum. It is suitable for any paper which is safe with the OB filter but the OB filter should not be used for papers specifying an OC filter such as modern variable contrast filters.

I hope this helps this is some limited info I have on the OB filter.
