Kodak - Nottingham (UK) factory closing!

Sorry to be the bearer of more bad news. Breaking news on the BBC is that Kodak have announced they are closing a factory in Nottingham UK with the loss of 600 jobs.

No more details at present about Nottingham but have found this Press Release on the Kodak site

Looks like this one and here's what Kodak say on their site before the announcement -

"The Annesley factory lies in the heart of the East Midlands, just north of Nottingham. Here Kodak is involved in precision component manufacture and assembly, for the spooling and packaging of 35mm, APS and Roll Film products for the photographic industry in the UK, Europe, Africa, Middle East and Russia.

This facility is the second largest Kodak film finishing factory in the world, and in 2004 will celebrate its 25th anniversary"

It's not a bad idea to keep a good stock of film and rotate your inventory.

This is, in fact, bad news, especially for the employees of the plant who will be let go.
I must say, however, that all of these plant closures and the tightening up of the manufacturing processes of the major film manufacturers makes 'business' sense.
With the way manufacturing processes and logistics have been developing over the past decade or so, I can't say that I'm surprised...Truthfully, if it's not already the case, within a few years, we will probably see all manufacturing of film done in Asia. When you balance off the costs of doing 'local' manufacturing (in smaller plants across the globe) and then shipping locally against manufacturing in a single massive plant and shipping globally to regional distribution centres, well, the latter is much more rational (from a business sense).

I don't have a crystal ball, but I would submit that it all means the continuation of the manufacture of our favourite films and chemistry...It's all a huge shake-down.

I think you're spot on. I can't see film disappearing but the demand is no longer at the same level it used to be so restructuring is essential for the long term. It doesn't offer any consolation to the 600 newly unemployed though and that is always sad.

Yes used film equipment, including film cameras, darkroom stuff, etc., will be cheap, very cheap, and very very cheap in a few years, if you know the price of those old Polaroid cameras in the fleamarket or garage sale.

I had completely forgotten that you were the one who posted that insanity about our Pro 100 film being Lucky and how I didn't know where my film was coming from.

It looks more to me like a basic difference of opinion that needn't be reduced to personal insults. You believe that stockpiling favored out-of-production film is the way to deal the contraction of the film industry, John makes the point that it is better to support the companies that are likely to produce into the future. I tend to agree with John but I don't question anyone's decision to stock up on films that they particularly like.

It's an important issue these days but I'm not cynical enough to believe that either of your' points of view are motivated by personal gain.

I am trying to evaluate the situation here. I must have missed it ... just where is your "proof"?

I have to be honest. I mean I understand some people stockpiling on film they love because of its being foretold it will be discontinued.... or is doing so, but much like people have said. JandC is continually getting new batches of film. I tried to order some Pro 100 a few months ago, they were out, BUT A NEW BATCH WAS COMING IN.... as in the film was being produced at present and will (per jandc's comment) continue to be produced. I loved FP4 in 4x5 and 8x10 but its out of stock where ever I look for it. so I, like most people, would rather fund/support/ and give my business to people like JandC because it will only assist in solidifing the continued production of film.
Plus the jandc pro 100 saved me a boat load of money and I love how it looks dev in PMK Pyro and contact prints wonderfully.

jandc I will continue to give you my business and I admire and respect you for what you are doing.

You're absolutely right. At that moment in time it seemed like something needed to be said. In hindsight I should have ignored the commentary.

I'm opting for edging my bets I'm stocking up by buying more than I need as a fall back. If the films I love now remain available for a few years or new ones come out, no problems stock rotation will take care of age. If we lose the films we are currently using at least I'll have a reserve of the film I know how to use whilst I learn to use the alternatives
