Me too. I shoot less color than before. Expensive but I like the results. More selective than I’ve ever been in what I shoot. How much I shoot, and where I buy (film and processing).

With regard to the specific topic, Gold in 120... I'm looking forward to buying some and shooting more. I've easily found at least 2 retailers who have priced it lower than Portra. At that price, I'll probably shoot twice as much. For many things I prefer 35mm Gold to Portra.

Agree 100%.
Plus it is a little bit early to come to a conclusion about pricing, when in most cases all there are out there is the possibility to make an offer to buy.

It's for this reason I do all my processing (b/w, c-41 or e-6) at home. Essentially, three rolls pays for the kit, and I've gotten up to 25 rolls processed with a Unicolor 1-L kit. Granted, the downside is I don't shoot all that much, so it takes quite a lot of time to accumulate that many rolls to get those economics.

Cheapest I've found it in the lower 48 is Dwayne's out of Kansas. $6 per roll plus the ride there and back. There are many other labs that will do it for a few dollars more. But $10 per roll, once tax/shipping is taken into account, is probably close to average around these parts.

Maybe we are just lucky then. In each town of let's say 10.000/15.000 inhabitants there is a store of a chain that works together with Fujifilm. I dropped one of monday it was ready today. Paid €7 for 2 rolls of 120 slide film.

I have all the Fuji (and some Kodak) for everything C41, RA4, E6, black and white. I process my friends films for nothing. In large quantities the chemistry is cheap. We had a great place, locally, I still have lunch with the former owner. He decided he would close up and retire. It was a graceful exit, wine and beers towards the end, hundreds of customers dropped by the last couple weeks.
Now it's my darkroom.

My local lab, to which I can walk from home if I feel like a 25 minute stroll, is £4 flat fee for C41 and E6 in 110, 135, 120, 127 formats process and scan. Prints cost another £4 but the caveat is that they're digital prints. Still very good (Agfa dLab which seems to be one of the best, operated by a lady who's been processing film since the C22 days). I'm always free to take those negatives and do higher resolution, more careful scans at home (though she does manual scanning on a flat bed at little extra cost too)....or get them optically printed elsewhere. £4 for the processing even if you don't want the scanning seems pretty good. I know of other labs in the UK offering similar for £6 to £8. All taxes included which means our famous 20% VAT is included.

As for the cost of Gold in 120....all rather hypothetical this side of the pond as no retailer actually has any yet. But I've seen it offered at £38 for a 5-pack as a pre-order with Portra at the same retailer £60. Another anticipates £8.50 or £9 per roll once they have it in stock but is not committing until then. I've also seen these pre-orders not materialise in the past (eg Ektachrome) so I shall hold fire until someone actually has it in stock. Is it expensive? I'd ask a different set of questions. Is it worth it? and do I really think that Kodak could bring it to me any cheaper? THe answer to the first question is "probably"....and to the second "probably not". The days of £2 rolls of film are long gone. Sad but true.

Lucky for me, I saw the pricing and availability problems coming years ago. That is why I learned to mix my own chemistry from scratch chemicals for both C-41 and RA-4 (my main usage), and B&W. I stocked up on chemicals (powders, still good after many years), lots of paper and film (frozen). I paid prices of years ago for it all. This all sounds wonderful to me. £60 for 5 rolls of Portra seems a bit breathtaking, not really though. It sounds like smaller shops can still thrive in the UK and Europe. A level tax rate helps. In the US the big places have crushed most of the local shops.

If your chemistry goes bad quickly you are not storing it properly. Storing almost any color chemistry in glass, full, and tightly sealed containers will last months, some even years in my experience. Or you can always just mix what you need.

Dream come true for me. Ordered 10 packs off B&H today.

Casual shooters want the soulful look. I cant always tell portra off from digital, but I always recognize gold. The colours are not exactly true to life but there is a punchiness and artistic rendering that I absolutely love. This more than makes up for the loss of pro 400h. Not to rag on the other CN stocks, but this is at the top of the list for me.

Wondering if R Mowrey had any ifluence on the deicision to bring it back?

I'd be curious at that too. He passed in Feb 2020, but he may of had some influence even before that. I understand, according to Nico, that they were working on this film a long time, and halted progression for a short period. Then resumed, did beta tests Aug last year, and now we have the film today.

Miss Ron. He was a wealth of knowledge unmatched. He also loved the space program, which I do as well. He gave me some sheets of his 4x5 Super XX film, just so I could try it out. I always remembered his generosity. We did have some chats behind the scenes as well.

He knew people on the inside. Hell, he developed the original kodak gold. Who better to consult? My gut tells me he had some involvement.

Most of the beta testers appear to be popular youtube analog enthusiasts (some of whom occasionally post here.) I think Ribsy is a board member?

I would have loved to be a beta tester myself for this film, but I wasn't asked. Probably because my Youtube channel isn't big enough. I do have a background of schooling for photography, and a connection with Kodak, having worked in a photolab for 18 years that used Kodak supplies and equipment. But I wasn't aware there was a beta test for this film.

If they ever re-released Plus X or Panatomic X, I hope they do ask me next time to beta test. I still have some rolls of these films to compare it to.

The only person I can think of who posts semi-regularly here who might have been asked is Ai Print.
And they wouldn't have been likely to ask him because he would be unlikely to use Gold for his 120 colour.
I expect they would have mostly asked testers who have significant Instagram and Facebook presences, as that would be much more attuned to their target market.
YouTube is also a possibility, yes, but only if your presence is full of comparative colour discussions.

They still make Wratten filters, but not through Alaris' distribution channel.

"Wratten" does not necessarily refer to the actual gelatin filters, but also is a designation standard. As for instance the Agfa filter designations.
Given a Wratten designation you may find filters of same designation from other manufacturers, even of different material, or look up in tables similar filters with different designation.
