Kodak D76 - what's the ratio?

Hey all, so I picked up D76 in powder form. It's my first time mixing D76 powder. I've used TMAX and Ilford DDX for a while in pre-mixed liquid form so this is a new experience for me.

The instructions say to mix the whole package into 3 liters of 55 C water... and then top it up to 3.96 liters [hope I have that correct!].

Does this make it a 1:3 ratio ? Just need to know so I can figure out my development times!

This is the concentrate. To dilute to 1:3 add 3 times as much water as concentrate.
The concentrate is commonly referred to as "straight". Common dilution is 1:1, or 1:2.

When you mix it according to the label directions, you get stock solution. Any dilution ratio would be that stock solution with water and done later when you are ready to develop.

This is the stock undiluted solution . Bottle it off into 3 absolutely full liter bottles then dilute the remaining stock for use.

That makes it into stock D-76. You would need to dilute it further to get to a particular dilution.
Are you sure about 3.96 litres? I would think it would be 3.78 litres - 1 US gallon.

The instructions on the package say 3.8 liters. That's close enough to a US gallon as makes little difference.

As others have stated, that will be the stock solution. When it's time to develop film, you will either use it stock, or dilute 1+1 or 1+3, and use one shot then dump. You should decant the stock solution to smaller bottles filled to the top and capped tightly for storage.

I'll be using it with Kodak TriX and maybe some Ilford HP5 as well.
And OK I think I got it now. The package states a stock solution at a 1:1 ratio. I can then dilute this (at time of processing) to a 1:3 ratio and then use the processing times for then.

I currently use Tmax Dev at 1:4 ratio... but it comes pre-bottled as stock solution.

With Kodak, 1:1 means what I would describe as 1+1, 1:3 means 1+3 what I would describe as 1+3, and 1:4 what I would describe as 1+ 4.
So stock is just stock - you don't dilute (unless you want diluted and not stock).
