Kodak Color Paper from Ctein for sale

He's doing dye transfer and digital printing these days, I gather from his posts on The Online Photographer.

It's a shame that dye transfer materials are not available to buy off the shelf. Perhaps colour carbon printing is the real option these days aside from RA-4, Ilfochrome, and inkjet.

does he JUST print HIS photographs? Or, would he be open to printing dye transfers on a COMMISSION basis? i.e. :taking people's negs, masking, printing, making matrices (the works) for a price?

on his site he mentions having "mortgaged myself to the hilt", we could have him print some of our BEST negs, maybe under guidance...

just an idea.. you think he'd do it?

AFAIK, he did it in the past, but you'd need to have deep and full pockets to make it happen.

Yes, he does print for other people, but I gather he is fairly selective about the commissions that he accepts.

I wonder if he's paid off all the materials purchased through his print sales?

I think it's more about working with people whom he feels compatible with personally and aesthetically, and for whom he thinks dye transfer is the right medium. He mentioned on The Online Photographer at some point that he's been receiving a lot of donated materials recently. He made a low-cost dye transfer print offering and thought he was going to use up a substantial amount of his supply, but he ended up with more than he started with.

interesting. I have never seen a dye transfer in person before. I'd like to get the chance too.

I went to the Getty out here in LA the other day to see a I. Penn exhibit, Small Trades. Very interesting work. Pt/Pd prints as well as silver.

now I just have to write a 5 page paper on it .

so people were donating dye transfer materials to him? Is he now the only person doing dye transfer anymore? I know in his book he mentions one or two others, know if they're still doing it as well?

A google search for Dye Transfer reveals the dye transfer workers and the DT SIG on Yahoo. It is quite active.

Ctein and Jim Browning are both DT printers. Ctein works from color negatives and makes prints using Pan Matrix Film, whereas Jim works from Matrix film via Transparencies. Both of them produce stunning prints. If you have not seen one, by all means make an effort.

Ctein and Jim both accept donations of DT materials. My last box of 16x20 Kodak DT paper went to Ctein. He is a very nice person to communicate with and does superb work.
