I'm sure Kodak can figure out its optimum sales and distribution model without our help here.

Besides, what makes you think direct film sales would result in lower prices to the buyer, or higher profits to Kodak? Film has a market price based on demand, regardless how it finds its way to market.

Evidently kodak has decided its distribution chain adds some kind of value, or else they'd do it themselves and simply charge what they do now---evidently the market will bear their pricing. Distribution and customer service cost money, regardless who does it. They can figure all this out without our assistance, I'm pretty sure.

All we have to do is buy the products, or not, and let the market sort out the details.

Well said, Mike. If you don't want to pay that much, use something less expensive.

BMW is more expensive than Chevy, Chateau Haut Brion costs more than Kendall Jackson, TMax costs more than Foma. There are good reasons for its high price.

I bet we'll all be willing to pay a whole lot more than $5.00/sheet for it after it's discontinued. Let's buy it and appreciate it while we can.

Let's see about the cost of film.....compared to the other costs associated with a 6 day photo trip:
1600 miles @ IRS allowance 0.51 per mile = $800
5 nights motel @ 50/night = $250
Meals $30/day x 6 days = $180
Film 100 sheets 8x10 @ 5.50/sheet = $550 + 10 rolls 35mm @ $5/roll = $50 + 25 sheets 7x17 @ $7/sheet = $175 Total $775. (All TMY)
I NEVER worry about the cost of film because it is NEVER the major cost associated with making LF photographs.
Hell, most of you wouldn't think twice about dropping some major coin on a lens, but mention film and some get their dander up. If you don't want to keep paying ever higher film costs, stock up your freezer with film. The stuff will NEVER be cheaper or more readily available then it is today.

Now go make some images!

I just bought a sc***er and a pr***er, for that how much film could I have bought? I just bought a View Camera magazine, ouch Seven Dollars and Ninety Five Cents US but Per Volquartz was a contributor so it's worth a whole lot more that just pictures on paper. Want to get free film? Review your spending and budget for the coming year, can you shave off some from auto insurance, impulsive spending, or any other items that you have specific control over? I remember the saying in the 1970 decade: "Is this trip really necessary?" I've cut back driving and try to do more than one thing when I'm out. I don't hang out at the hardware store looking for home improvement projects but go there to get a predetermined project done and done within budget. Cut runaway spending and there will be money for that film purchase and some left over for chemicals too.

I took two workshops within a year, flew, hotels, ate out, except at one for a nice lunch, rented a car, paid for gas, tips, taxes, and still had money for film, it was the cheapest item on the list. I know that it all adds up but the pain must be seen in the big picture and not be focused on entirely as a photography deal maker. That's not to say there are no limits to what the customer will pay, that's marketing, you control which products you will buy and use. Choose carefully and do review and talk about the cost of doing our business, it's important, but don't go to bed thinking it will all come to a close tomorrow. Photography and Art is too important to let manufacturers control our thoughts and bog us down.

Lately I've been introduced to Carbon Transfer and Platinum / Palladium printmaking. For those I need a negative to contact print and since I prefer a larger print I'll need a larger negative. I plan to make my share of 5x7 and 8x10 in camera negatives while my earlier work was nearly all in medium format I've joined the Hybrid sister site and will be making some other type of negatives. My heart is in a negative from a non electronic camera and I plan to be a last man standing. As long as film is available I will be a user.
