Back in August a partially used roll of 120 Ektar 100 was used to photograph the night sky. Having taken my homemade tracking mount out of storage a couple of cameras were mounted on it to check how well it was aligned and how well it tracked the sky. Exposure times were from 5 to 8 minutes, the Ektar was in my Lubitel with the aperture at f4.5. When the scans of the shoots came back from the lab the markings on the film backing paper could be seen on the darker images. Frames closer to the end of the roll seem to be worse (the image where the camera moved on it's mount, brighter background with smeared star trails), but it wasn't as noticeable on a darker frame at mid-film (having trouble getting images attached). What caused this? Can it be avoided the next time? Its been a few years since I last did meteor trail photography, and usually with much faster colour and B&W film but haven't come across this before.

This has been an extensively discussed topic this year. Search "backing paper transfer" and you'll find some of the threads. Mostly associated with B&w film but examples with Ektar have also come to light, here and on photo.net.

Thanks, I'm not alone in this. Its good to know in order to avoid it happening again.

What is the current status on this issue? Have recent batches been reported as having the issue or can we consider it as solved?

Thanks,
ETN

The package I have has 1201 014 10/2016 and it was processed ahead of the expiration date. What I'd like to know, as many of the faster colour print films that I used 20 years ago are no longer available, and I never had this problem with them, is what can I use for this type of of photography? This last effort I had the best results with the tracking mount just to be disappointed with no meteors and this problem.

The problem is with the backing paper (and the ink on it).
Contact Kodak Alaris at the email address listed in this thread: (there was a url link here which no longer exists)

I've taken the liberty of adding your Ektar experience to that thread.

Thanks for the info and re-posting my experience to the other thread.

I have recently had the same problem with my last 3 rolls of 120 Kodak Ektar 100. Ill be following both posts for updates. I will be contacting Kodak and see what their response will be since most that I have read effected their black and white film.
