They have some nice stuff. Artsy photos. I seldom see any good street work at galleries. Street work aka ugly photos don't sell unless they are by established names it seems.

Since street / documentary is my thing that is what I prefer to see. But am open to all types of work.

Glad you enjoyed that. Great relief from the old "scenic" "street" etc schticks have about worn themselves out...

Current photography, rarely noticed on Photrio, is often very strong and is seen in galleries all over the place, not just in NYC.

There are thousands of Galleries world wide including my home town that can pull up a roster of artist page as shown.. I have a unique perspective as I have had
a gallery on and off for over 20 years, within that time line we have hung hundreds of shows on our walls.. My gallery has always been a rental space and we never in the long history have
represented the artists that showed here, I have had work on my walls that has gone on to hang in Museum Shows and I have had shows that quite frankly stunk the house out.

Today I am moving forward in my life, and hoping to have a live work space and within that work space still continue on with a very small gallery The Dylan Ellis Gallery named after one of my assistants
who passed away 10 years ago this month. My goal for this gallery if I can swing it is to hang very good, photographic bodies of work, probably no more than 10 images in the room.. No representation, no fee, just a small room
in my life where I can find and hang great work.

Here is my thoughts on these contemporary gallery's... I could probably approach any one of them and be able to pretty much pick and choose my work to hang within this new space , of course for some of the work I really like it may be impossible or there may only be 2-5 pieces.
But I have been thinking in the back of my mind, I really want to hang Brassai , Sanders, Moon, Penn, Salgado, Shelby Lee Adams, now that is a challenge, I am not sure I would be able to swing such a deal, in fact I do not even know how to try to do this.
I am sure the Avedon Foundation would look down at me in disgust for even proposing such a offensive thing, but really I am one of his biggest fans, go figure.


To the OP the contemporary Gallery's are showing what will sell to corporations, High End Condo's and are really not concerned about the type of work people like me and many here are interested in.

The polar opposite would be A Gallery in New Orleans is unique IMO as the owner has bought all his collection or most of it himself and its quite an amazing collection,or Paul Paletti Gallery , I have visited his Gallery many times and his collection is amazing and worth the trip to Kentucky.

We seem to be in a time of Story Telling , Avatar, Lord of the Rings, period where anyone with a semi decent concept , a bit of fantasy , and good digital skills can create a masterpiece... This seems to be what the people want, Who am I to argue when there are indeed great artists leading the way though 25 years ago Jeff Wall was considered out there, now every corner gallery can boast their artist who looks like him, their artist who looks and feels like Ed Burtynski , How many Gursky clones can we take, and if I see another fantastic interior of a palace I think I am going to lose it.

What I am seeing is with the advent of the 100mp Trichromatic back , the real ability for Weekend Warriors to easily capture 8x10 to 11 x14 Camera Resolution with the ease of a medium format camera. We are going to see more, and more and more
of these big photo projects where reality will take a back seat to fantasy.
I know of 7 people in the last year that have sold all their existing equipment to get on a used rental to large 100mp package and all the good schools have these systems in place for their students to work with. So I suggest to the OP that this trend is here and it will last for a few years, I do think with global overcrowding in the centers of the world where commerce is done , people will be packaged in smaller containers(condo's) and the small print will have a resurgence.
And you will then see a much more different look coming out of the gallery's .

My little city (Albuquerque 650K pop in the middle of the desert) is hosting a spectacular public exhibition of around 75 amazingly well-printed roughly 4 foot by 6 foot reproductions of important paintings from Spain's Prado Museum. The reproductions are inkjet-printed on some sort of plastic substrate. There is zero hint of halftone or printer dot, color is excellent. Painting texture and flaws seem perfectly rendered.

Could easily be an Avedon exhibit. His gigantic murals of his dying father are profoundly moving and would attract broad public attention due to his genius and the importance of age and cancer to everyone...

Exhibition future can be here right now. It's relatively important for galleries to display exquisite techniques but it's profoundly more important for them to get photographic shows equivalent to the Prado's to the public..Albuquerque's is in our all-concrete city center at 90-plus degrees, protected only by surveillance cameras and sun shades, 24X7 ...zero graffitti after its first week. Nothing prevents these prints from being touched and there are no warnings.

One question is, who cares enough about photo images to underwrite something like this. I fear that too many care mostly about favorites, photo toys, techniques, and habitual photo-technical preferences and too few actually care about stills as images.
