Klimsch Apo Ronar lens designation question

What means the „L“ or „S“ in the name of some Klimsch Apo-Ronar lenses?
There are also some focal lengths without an additional letter in the name, are these predecessors?

For example,
Klimsch Apo-Ronar L 240mm or
Klimsch Apo-Ronar S 800mm or
Klimsch Apo-Ronar 480mm (without additional letter)

Well for Apo-ronar sold directly by Rodenstock there exists a CL version with linarized aperture. Probably this is the Klimsch L version.

Rodenstock also made a CLM version with minimal distortion at a certain reproduction scale and there is a 6 element ronar for the longer wavelengths. Not sure which corresponds to Klimsch S.

In Rodenstock parlance, "L" = linearized aperture. "CL" = linearized aperture with lens elements cemented to the barrel.

Now the remaining question is, what means the "S"', could it be this is a sort of CLM lens? I'm not sure about this.

Yes it is on the lens, the lens is without shutter or lensboard.

Never heard of such cementing. What was the idea behind that?


Cementing in the meaning of locking ring + glue? Or just glued to the barrel?
I mean, a locking ring helps in centering.

"In the Apo-Ronar series designated as "CL" the lens elements are adjusted within the barrel by autocollimation and then casted force-fit within the barrel by means of suited resin."

What most probably means locking the traditional way plus added glue. The sketches show locking rings, and are stated to be applicable for the plain- and CL-versions.



(Dan, thank you for that link. The old fart actually has an Rodenstock Apo-Ronar (CL) catalogue in his archive, but it does not say a word about that fixing, not even about that designation. So I thought it not much sense searching the net, but hoped for your old man's wisdom...)
