I recently picked up a Kiev 88 for the first time and love it to bits however I've encountered an issue with the shutter where at 1/60th & 1/125th speeds the shutter curtain won't fully close after exposure:
giving this effect:
Unfortunately for me when I showed my negs to a Photography Technician at my University then muddled with the camera and adjusted the shutter whilst the camera wasn't cocked which then caused the same effect to happen at 1/125th speed which before wasn't an issue..... Great... Fortunately all the other speeds work perfectly fine, However as it's winter now in the UK there's often quite poor lighting conditions now and those 1/60th & 1/125th shutters are becoming a must..
I do love the Kiev to bits but it was a large investment on my part, is there anyway I can fix this issue and make it useable again on a budget?
Yes, but be aware of the Ukrainian post. I had Kiev 60 serviced there, repairing took a week or so, shipping there and back four months. Somehow nobody was there and all of asudden, the address seemed to be wrong.
The camera developed issues again, so back it went, now it sits in storage in Kiev because the post couldn't deliver it. Supposedly no one was there.
But, never fear, lots of people have had great results with them, including the post.
If your able and prepared to fix it yourself , get the repair manual here ; http://www.kievaholic.com/ scroll down and click on the link for Steve Ash's repair manual .
If you don't have the skill's required to do this sort of work , then leave well alone as it's easy to end up with a scrap camera .
There is probably someone in the U.K able to repair it and service it for you . Use the forum search function for "camera repair in the U.K" , I'm sure there are still a fair few about that work on older cameras .
