Carl mentioned Kallitype was also a very nice process so it got me curious. Today I picked up 100 gr of silver nitrate at e bay, so I figure why not try?

My question, has anybody tried this without sizing the paper? I hate sizing and if there is a paper where this can be done I would love to know which one.

Or how about the addition of PVA to prevent the emulsion from sinking too much instead of sizing, has naybody tried this?

Thanks.

Jorge,

I didn't use any sizing in my tests. Small prints went fine, but I ran into streaking with large (12x20) prints. I was using Lenox. To deal with the streaking I would try other papers rather than use sizing. Since the process has a lot of similarities, it also might be worthwhile to try an oxalic acid pretreatment as can help papers used for Pt/Pd. I think Sandy King lists several papers that worked well for him in his Kallitype procedure--probably written up on unblinkingeye.

Thanks Carl, I guess I will try with other papers. maybe start with 4x5 and see how it goes.
Maybe drop Sandy a line and see what he reccommends if he does not have an article in UE.

Sandy is currently working on an article about Kallitype and Vandyke. Everything I have been able to find regarding Kallitype indicates that, like Vandyke, in most cases additional sizing is not necessary. I recently purchased all the chemicals necessary to make ferric oxalate, so I will be experimenting with Kallitypes soon. Meanwhile, I've been trying various formulae for salted paper--I got excellent results with Namias' formula, which uses zinc chloride as the salt. I have various salt paper formulae at http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/Salt/salt.html and some Vandyke and Kallitype formulae at http://unblinkingeye.com/Articles/Ferric/ferric.html.

Thanks Ed. I saw both articles plus Sandy sent me his instructions from the alt group. Thanks for the info about no sizing.
