Last night I was bored and decided to do something
Make a sloppy homebrew Pyro developer

I had this old Dye Transfer Tanning developer Part A packets laying around
Throwing this stuff into water should make a very good developer for matrix film printing or whatever but I want to do Tri-X

So
To make 1L
1/3 packet "part b" of the Part A (Pyro constituent)
2 grams+- of Pyro (perfectly white)

No Bromide so added about 2ml of Orthazite

No meta/bisulfite and was really at a loss
Figured I'd just use Boric Acid
About 10 grams of Boric Acid

I thought Boric acid was less acidic than the bisulfite so I added a pinch of Citric acid, too ..just for good measure or something

:rolleyes: Got bored went for broke
Added PPD as I had read PPD was a good with pyro
2 official pinches
Glycin about 1/4 teaspoon

I had part a of Part A tanning developer still so I put in 1/5 of that packet
1g metol
.5g ascorbic acid
.2g methyl paraben
1g bromide ..there we go!
.02 methylbenzotriazole)

All dissolved

To make 1L
105g Sulfite
2 teaspoons Kodalk

To make 1L
75g Pot carbonate granular

Shot some books with Cooke 158mm in dull room light @ F11
Tri-X 4x5
2 seconds --> 8 seconds

"ABC" 1+1+1+7

developed half sheet at 70 degrees 13.5 min
Very thin

developed last half at 67 or so for 25 min
pretty good thin neg
Green stain
no overall yellowing or anything

Fixed in pretty exhausted Kodak hardening fixer -I know

Low contrast print on old SW Velox F3 but tones look good
Pretty sharp

BEST PYRO FORMULATION EVER

what would you have expected from it? What should have I done differently? besides having just used D76/gone to bed

What jinxed it was you didn't give it a name before use and Christen it, "I dub thee 'XYZ' developer" and then smash a bottle of cheap beer in the fireplace. If you'd done that...

Now, what are you going to name it?

You should definitely call it DTT-OB-PPD-MAMB-ADD. Devote a whole website to it. Promote it on every internet forum related to photography or anything else for that matter. Start a blog. Post some of the flat prints in your gallery and expatiate on the glories of flatness. It will develop a cult following.

DTT-OB-PPD-MAMB-ADD

The curve is easy to find - just drink some of that beer you should have smashed in the fireplace like Jim said.

White Chocolate Mocha Frappuccino® Light Blended Coffee, and an extra espresso shot, some croutons, jalapeños, black bean sauce - shaken, not stirred, please. And, yes, I do want fries with it.

May have been due to the Boric Acid.

Stop by and I'll give you a demo.

I just finished the days emulsion making and coating AAMOF. So, it would be nothing special.

I went down and did some rescue work on my Pyro and have much better results

I changed the solution dilution
2.5+2+1+8
Just went by gut, of course

developed by inspection
I turned on a watch illumination for a few seconds and held close to negative
Did this at 15min/25/30/35/45 minutes
Would 30 seconds of illumination fog the film? It doesn't seem like it. Minimal at most.

At 25min the neg was still thin and lacking contrast
I figured I'd add carbonate
I added part B of Kodalith which consists of carbonate and bromide and whatever else as it was pre-mixed and easy to get to
About 2oz

New dilution would be about 2.5: 3.5+ : 1: 9.5?

More density in just about 5 minutes
Maybe the pyro 1:1:1 is just too alkaline
No clue

At 50 minutes I decided to take it out since it was good enough for my test.
Now to dry and print ..maybe before bed.

Some british guys prefer to add some mint sauce and plumpudding ... that makes a perfect "yawn in technicolor"... :D

Everything was done quickly but
Here is my print
It's a straight contact using a lightbulb on Ilf MG RC Dektol 1:3
So basically three "instantaneous" flickers
no filter

Didn't get good adhesion so it came out soft in most areas

taken with digital camera as scanner isn't hooked up
Not anything! near the print but it at least gives an idea. No highlights blown.

The blacks look fantastic.

Now I'm wondering what a "proper" brew would give me.
