It's an F601 which cost me a grand total of $7.50! Except for some heavy pipe tobacco residue, it looks and functions as new.

Unfortunately, no matter how good I clean it, I cant get rid of the smell.

This should do it!

But seriously, have you tried something like Nature's Miracle on the non-sensitive surfaces?

Auto detailers will sometimes use an ozone machine like this to remove smoke odors from vehicles. If you can find one near you, perhaps you can stash your camera body in the vehicle when they do that.

The remaining offenders are the grip (soaked into rubber), and inside the shutter buttons socket. Possibly under the command dial as well.

Close the door with extreme care. The F601 has a hook made of plastic that would embarrass a cracker toy, fitting a metal latch. It never ends happily. Two of mine broke sitting in a drawer. An eBay seller used to offer a replacement metal hook for anyone confident in micro-surgery, but very hard to find now I'd imagine. Shame really because apart from the happ'orth o'tar door the 601 is a well equipped camera.

I also have the rare 601M, a camera that took AF lenses but didn't autofocus! Also with silly door.

Well now you know why it was so cheap.

I got the smoke smell out of my camera scrubbing it with q-tips using water and baking soda as a gentle abrasive. But it is an F5 so probably a different rubber. Good luck getting that smell out!

This weekend I will travel 250 miles 2 ways a total of 500 miles to pick up a few Nikon and a few other brands cameras. Among the Nikon's are an F4s, FE, FM2. The cost is only for the drive all of them are free.

+1 Put it in a plastic bag and use it as a parts camera.

tobacco smoke is evil good luck. try to put into a drawer with an open container with baking soda for a week or two.

Newspaper is wonderful at absorbing odors. Loosely pack the camera in crumpled newspaper and let it sit for a while, perhaps replacing the newspaper periodically. Do it just overnight and notice the difference. If it works (smelling the newspaper will tell you how much odor it is absorbing), then do it for a week. If it is a daily shooter for you, then just do it each night when you put it away.

Hey new friend, whatcha gonna do with all those?

Anyway, I plan to use this F601 with my 35-70 as my "always with me" mainstay, which will relegate my F90x and 28-105 to a dedicated shooting rig.

Let the camera sit in fresh air for a few weeks. Most of the odor will leave on its own.

One other thing activated charcoal will absorb big stinky organic compounds like crazy. It's used in water filtration. You can find bulk on ebay or small bags for aquarium filters. Pur the granulated charcoal in a cloth bag with the camera in a 1 gallon zip lock bag and come back in the spring.
Coca nut shell charcoal is preferred for drinking water taste and odor filters in fridges etc.
