Jupiter 12 versus Industar 61. In colour!

Tomorrow I am buying a Jupiter 12 35mm from 1956 for my FED3.

Today my FED3 has an Industar 61 attached, which is quite lovely for black and white. But colours are a little off if one uses colour print film (have not tried with slide), enough to make the photos both too red and too green at the same time, if that is possible.

Do you find Jupiter 12 to treat colour in a similar way?

My Industar-61 and -26 give me "old postcard" type of colours with Fuji Superia. I sort of like it. My relatively late Jupiter-12 (black -87 model) renders colours a bit better. But I would guess older models like yours were not designed with colour photos in mind, so I wouldn't expect too much.

The Industar-61 used low-dispersion glass and has a very high degree of color correction. I modified a couple for use on the Contax and Nikon RF's. I'm surprised yours is not performing well. The J-12 is prone to flare, be sure to keep the front element out of the sun. It is lower contrast than the I-61.

Lens hacker, below are links to two photos that I made with the Industar 61 and Fuji400H. That film looks wonderful through my Nikkor lenses, but apparently does not mix well with Industar. They are colour corrected after scanning, still look off to me.

Thanks for the advice on the Jupiter 12. Have run half a film through it as of now, so no results yet.

I'll have to find my Industar test shots. I ended up converting four of them to Contax/Nikon mount, and either sold them or traded them.

The color rendition is different from the Nikon SLR lenses. A bit "colder", ie blue-shifted? I probably put a Skylight on mine to warm the colors.

maybe we have different versions. Mine has the serial number 7156066 if that tells anything. The lens does not indicate that it is multicoated or coated at all.

Here is another photo, and that I did not try to colour correct. The background is greenish rather than blue. The foreground is lit by a light bulb, I think. All-over strange colour rendition, but in this case not entirely unpleasant.

Suggest you need to borrow or make a deep lens hood, for the industar. You will tend to get pastel colours otherwise...

The J12 is hooded enough unless you have the sun illuminating the front surface of the lens, or you fit a filter. If you fit a filter a wide angle hood is pretty necessary.

Thanks for the reply, but here I reached the limit of my English understanding. Does this has to do with sun light falling directly on the lens?

I'm sorry I apologise it is actually French but it is an expression we would use in English, between photographers.

When you have the sun behind you a sceane is lower in contrast compared with when the sun is behind the subject even if it does not directly fall on the lens, e.g. a reflection of a water surface,will be stronger.

The industar or indeed any lens will benifit from a lens hood.

When you are taking photos in any open location like a field or mountain any light outside the picture will tend to dilute the colour saturation of the picture. A lens hood will reduce this effect.

You would shade your eyes when you need to see more clearly against the glare of the sun? Or clean your sun glasses. The Industar may not have been cleaned internally in decades.

I apologise again - the contrast, I was referring to was the contrast of the sceane, not the lens or the photo.

CosinaVoightlander made the 40mm f1.4 available in single coat and multi coat.

They expected the SC lenses to be taken up by the mono photographers and the multi by the colour photographers.

Any internal reflections from lens surfaces and interior baffles/mounts will have a different effect in colour and monochrome.

Your industar will produce less saturated colours, they will appear more pastel shades.

A hood will help a lot.
