Did street photographer John Free ever explain if he generally used aperture priority mode, shutter priority mode, or just manual mode while out doing his street photography in a published interview or video?

I am curious because he was particular about certain things (e.g. having a 100% coverage viewfinder) and he often gave detailed explanations for why.

You should probably be aware that some people using cel phones to access Photrio may miss the latter parts of your thread title.
How about "John Free - metering for street?"
And it is rarely a good idea to have your enquiry in your thread title, and to omit it in the body of your post.
Otherwise people might encounter something like this quote in a subsequent post, and have trouble understanding your question:

There is not much in the website you link to. Perhaps he shoot in manual and doesn't have a meter.

I expect that the question was asked here because John Free appears to have passed away on March 30, 2024.

I always saw John using a Nikon F3. I assumed he was used aperture priority auto exposure. He was a very charismatic fellow and always generous with his time and knowledge.

John was popular. Here are a few good videos about him:

His prints from time with The Art of Photography

Unfortunately, it looks like his site has been stripped of most of the images. You can see more in the videos I linked above.

Yes, he passed away, unfortunately.

Thanks, I didn't ever hear a direct quote from him about it in his videos so I wonder...

So that's why his Youtube channel went silent. Sad thing as he looked like a really fun guy to hang around.
