My dad was there on Iwo Jima. The photo was one of the most symbolic images in history during one of the most deadly combat missions in WWII. Every time I see it or the the monument in Washington DC which is so powerful, I can't help thinking of Ira Hayes and the other men.

On my visit to DC from England, the monument was one of the places I wouldn't have missed, having been introduced to the scene on a US postage stamp at a very young age and seen it reproduced many times thereafter. If only we could all leave behind us images that powerful.
