Yeah, why not. The main question is whether it'll still be worthwhile if you add shipping, VAT and duty clearance costs.
Yes, the same problem, I thought. Now I am thinking about whether I should go back to China at holiday and brought it to the UK in a checked suitcase.

You could do that; technically it's illegal, IDK what the odds te of your suitcase being picked out for it. I don't think I'd risk it personally - too much hassle.

I don't understand what risks there might be? For me, the only risk is that the box might get dropped and something might break. After I got a Jobo, I came across this chinese imitation of Jobo, and I'm inclined to think that if I hadn't been lucky enough to buy the original Jobo, I would have tried its chinese copy.

Customs becoming nasty with you and having to go through a lot of paperwork and ultimately paying up to be able to import the device. It'll depend on the country you're traveling to and how customs work there. I know around here checks have picked up sharply in recent years.

is this theory or practice
It's a gold bar and an inexpensive device.
Ultimately, if you have any preconceived ideas, the device can be disassembled into several parts and placed in your carry-on luggage.

I'm a color developing and printing newbie, obviously I can't afford cpe2 or cpe3, but I don't want to accept the inconsistency of hand-developing via sous vide, so I found this imitation from a Chinese company, which only costs 600AUD, and has almost the same functions as cpe3. PID temperature control, but don't know if they have an overseas sales team.

you can ship it from china. as a chknese, i can tell you that there's a lot of company can do this. Buy it from taobao and ship it to their warehouse, they will pack it and ship this to your place. about 89+39/500g in cny.

As said many times, depends on where you are. Around here, customs have caught up with the habit of the population to buy from China, and they have a pretty effective system in place for tax collection.

yeah, but the most expensive model was less than 500 usd i think, so i don't think there can be much tax

It can still be worthwhile, yes. $USD 500 item price in China would mean we'd generally pay around €650-€750 when all's said and done in terms of shipping, taxes & clearance costs. Ca 5 years ago that would be the price of a CPE2 on the 2nd hand market around here - if you could find one. I imagine prices have gone up now.
Maybe I should cash on that Jobo I've got sitting idle here; I can't quite recall last time I used it. Must have been around September or so.
