Jessops in Leamington is a bit daunting...get accosted as soon as you look at the cabinets. Best to go via the pub first, so you're weaing beer armour. I tried convincing my brother about the merits of a 50mm prime for his new Canon, and we were pounced on immediately. Actually put him off buying anything I think. There's a nice little Fuji shop down the road in Wellesbourne where the chap knows his stuff though I buy all my film stuff from 7dayshop, Nova or Ag Photographic. Its kind of ironic that the digital era is killing off the camera shops.
It's killing off camera shops because digital imaging is an adjunct of the computer industry and are sold now by electrical retailers like Comet , P.C. World or Curries, together with scanners and printers .

There's a website for Avon Studios (www.avonstudios.co.uk), not much in the way of film online, but the actual shop maybe different. I've got a faint recollection of visiting the shop years ago, I parked right outside in a lay-by.

Its not a shop for kit so much as a source of advice for me, and printing out colour stuff for me. I think their main business are weddings and portraits. Like I said above, I tend to rely on the big retail places like 7dayshop, Nova and Ag photographic for kit (and Ebay for cameras/lenses). Avon studios does have frames and albums though.

I tried joining the Leamington photo soc, and was put on a waiting list for the last year, but will be joining soon I hope. Other than that, he was the only other photographer I know in the area shooting film, so I would get the odd roll processed there and go and get advice at the same time, such as finding out I had underexposed stuff and where locally to sort out repairs (Skears was recommended).

I dont know actually. I had not given it any thought in the interim since I first registered, at which time I was just using digital. I have got a darkroom set up myself, so the facilities aren't important...its more the sharing of darkroom ken. Moreover, I'd be a bit concerned about the ratio of digital/analogue users. I see they have a bunch of members with accreditation from the RPS, and figured it would be a decent club. Do you guys have any recommendations for local clubs? I know there is a good one in Smethwick, its just a bit far to go from Leamington on a regular basis. Maybe this is best done via PM?

I used to live in Leam and considered joining the photo soc around 10-15 years ago now. Back then the society was only just becoming independent, it used to be organised as a club within Automotive Products (AP): the big factory on Tachbrook Road which has now all but disappeared. As I worked for AP, I knew some members of the club. But like you I have/had my own darkroom so I wasn't sure if I would benefit from joining. Then later I applied for redundancy went full time at Warwick University and joined the society there.

(how's about that for deviating from the OT?)
