Japan Visit - MF Nikon Splurge

MAP camera

Agreed! I haven’t been there in quite a few years now, but when I went, it was an absolute treasure house of impressive camera gear.

Consider some of the latest Voigtlander chipped manual focus (used) Nikon mount lenses, in addition to the vintage Nikon lovelies

I live within walking distance of the Nikon factory in Natori, although I don't think they make cameras there anymore. Japan is indeed a paradise for used photo gear, but you need to be prudent about where to shop. Many stores in the upmarket areas like the Ginza specialize in rare and beautiful items, and consequently have eye watering prices -- think Lemon Camera. Great for looking, not so good for bargains. For run of the mill manual Nikkor lenses it's much better to seek out shops in the outer areas -- try Fujiya Camera off Nakano Broadway, which also has film at competitive prices (a roll of 135 Oriental 400 for USD6).

I found a list on Petapixel that I have been using to get started.

Could you give me an idea from this list of which ones to focus on as I’m not after anything other than quality / common lenses?

The counterpart in the UK is called the London Camera Exchange. Been using them for forty years.

There’s quite a few options online in the UK but it’s increasingly hard to find quality well looked after stock.

20mm.F2.8 AIS
35mm F2 AIS
85mm F1.4 AIS
105mm F1.8 or F2.5 AIS
135mm F2 of F2.8 AIS
180mm F2.8 ED AIS

I have all of these & don't think you could go wrong with any of them.

Exactly. BTW there are so many of these common (& appreciated) lenses in Japan. you can find many still boxed, unused. Of course there is a range of prices. But nothing in the nosebleed price range like black paint Leicas. Even Nikon F2 Titan can be had for a reasonable price.

That's a great list from Petapixel-- one that I might use myself! Honestly, Nikon is a prolific brand, and you're not looking for anything exotic. I like Fujiya, mostly because it's got a big range and I know where to find the shop (this a country 'where the streets have no name', literally). I think you'll be served well by most of these places - you'll find dozens of Nikkor MF lenses in good condition, and most are reasonably priced. Choose a shop that is easy to find and close to your hotel, and otherwise enjoy Japan.

I just got back from 5 weeks in Japan -- based in Tokyo. In the Shinjuku area I went to a couple high-end used camera shops (Map Camera and another close by). No...they do not sell standard cable releases which I found disappointing. A different idea of what a camera store is...

I liked Nikon House -- an astonishing variety of all things Nikon. A few years ago I snagged an F2 body that mated nicely with an orphaned eye-level prism I had. However, two weeks ago I looked for the shop in the same location (Ginza) and it was no more. The curved glass is still there, but displaying cakes, not Nikon.
