The APUG Photo Challenge is a monthly bash where members go and make a photograph fitting a given theme and upload the result to the APUG Challenge Gallery (towards the bottom of the page on the Galleries menu). The original idea came from APUG member (and B&WP UK editor) Ailsa who said (in part):

"I was pondering the other day that I often produce my best work when given a brief or a project, whereas when an idea is self-imposed, I tend to just float around it and not really knuckle down. So I got to thinking, how about setting up an APUG photographic challenge thread?"

"The themes can be as open or as specific as you like, within reason - obviously there wouldn't be much point in telling me to photograph a tree in Yosemite, unless the person setting the challenge was willing to pay my air fare and accommodation..."

"...it could be a great opportunity to break out of our usual styles and try something completely different."

And so, the theme for this month has been selected as :-

"A self portrait that says something about where you live. That could mean your house, your street, your city, whatever. " as suggested by Andrew Moodie.

Yes, I don't like getting in front of the lens either... ...but that's the point; to try something new!

Closing date is, as always, the 10th of next month. Let's see what you can do!

Around the start of next month we'll start a new thread to discuss the theme for February's Challenge.

All the best,

Frank

Thanks for the new thread with the info! I never kept up with the old challenges since they got lost in that huge thread...

I think having a thread per challenge is a good idea, and we may get more participants. Going through that long thread was getting a little tedious. Can we link the gallery to the new thread each month, rather than leading folks to that long thread?

OHhhh, was that the thread about? Yah, I didn't even bother looking at it. This it the internet--I have very low attention span

I like the challenge idea myself, but the time factor is too short. I just can't turn around an image in that short of time, otherwise, I would participate. If we could announce these a couple of months out, then perhaps.

Robert it would be great to have you onboard here. I don't see why it shouldn't be possible to decide on another subject for we are always one month in advance.

Anyone got any idea's for what should come after "A self portrait that says something about where you live. That could mean your house, your street, your city, whatever. " as suggested by Andrew Moodie for next month??? Sorry Frank I nicked your typing from above

Blimey, this is in danger of getting organised!

Okay, I'll launch another thread to discuss the February challenge.

OK, call me stupid, but is there a link other than at the end of the old challenge thread to get to these new threads? I havn't been able to find it, and it seems kind of silly that I would have to go to the end of the original challenge thread to get here. Can some one point out the shortcut on the gallery page or forum page for me?

There is no shortcut on the Gallery or Forum page.

My reasoning was that the new threads would be more active and would thus show up on people's New Posts searches. To link these through from the gallery or to make them sticky would involve more work for Sean (especially with a couple of new threads a month) who, I feel, has more than ample on his plate already.

Hopefully the (anticipated!) lively discussion over the themes and images posted will keep them in the forefront. I don't propose anything more rigid for the time being.

Rather than going through the "new posts" path, you might find it easier to go through the Forums->English Forums->User Organized Functions path. The more current threads, like this one, show up just below the "sticky" threads.

Okay. Here's a brief rundown of the APUG Challenge situation as of 26 Jan 2005. I'm cross-posting this in all related threads in an attempt to clear up the apparent confusion.

The original (there was a url link here which no longer exists) was getting too long for easy browsing, so (by request) I set up a specific thread for the (there was a url link here which no longer exists). This was well received, but the timescale was felt to be too short for some people to put something together and the theme was presented more or less as a fait accompli.

To address these problems I started a (there was a url link here which no longer exists) and, once a goodly number of suggestions had been received, a (there was a url link here which no longer exists) so that people could choose what they wanted to do. (I would have combined these two, but I don't think you can turn an existing thread into a poll...).

The situation now is:

January Challenge
Theme - "A self-portrait which says something about where you live"
Closing date - 10 Feb

February Challenge
Theme - "Light can be dark"
Closing date - 10 Mar

All submissions should be posted in the (there was a url link here which no longer exists) by the appropriate closing date.

I propose creating a new March Suggestions thread followed by a March poll in a couple of weeks time (unless I lose the will to live in the meantime!). If anyone has any better ideas for how to organise the Challenge then please either PM me or post the suggestions in the original (there was a url link here which no longer exists). If people would rather someone else organised it, that's fine with me too.
