Well John,
Nice comments, but as a J&C customer I would also like to see John respond to customer inquiries directed to his business. I am waiting for a response as to the status of an order that was promised to be delivered last Wednesday via Fedex 2nd day delivery. 2 emails no response.

It is disappointing to see that John has time to post to the group, yet he fails to respond or address missed commitments to customers.

Sorry the rain on the parade!

Cheers,
Geary

Just read through this thread to try and get a feel of public acceptance. I am quite willing to give this a try especially after looking at the prices on the j&C web site.

It seems that the price is right but can anyone confirm (John) if the 4x5 cutting issue has been corrected (Size does matter!). The problems were cited around 6-8 months ago but the thread has gone cold, so I dont know if it has been resolved.

Yes, the size has been corrected with a new shipment of film.

Shortly after it became available again I ordered a bunch of it in 4x5. My nephew and I have both been shooting it for the last few months. It's a great film, and reacts very well to Pyrocat-HD.

I'm shooting more and more 8x10 these days, and will be ordering some of this film in 8x10 soon to compare to my current favorite (EFKE PL100).

I just ordered 250 sheets of the incorrectly cut 8x10 for $164.90. I'll trim it down and re-box it myself. That's a pretty darn good price. I can get 5x7's and I should get it cut down to 8x10 since it says online that it's too large to fit in holders. If not, then I get 500 5x7's. That's a lot of film for such a cheap price.

-Mike

Here is the link to this film. They also have it in 4x5 but not 5x7

I got a few 120s, and shot some happily over the weekend.....
has anyone tested caffenol with this film? I'll report back soon with caffenol-C (coffe + vitC) as my developer

Rodinal 1+100 + ascorbate (1/2 tsp in 600ml), for 10 minutes at 22C gave very good highlight density and coul duse some more shadow detail.
Haven;t checked the grain yet.

Just wanted to bring this thread back to top.
Also there are some markings in 1 of the rolls I have used so far... SGPFFF

JDEF- I have found any number of difficulties with this film. I have almost gone through 100 sheets of 4x5 and keep having problems. Low price does not equal a bargain if it doesn't do what it's supposed to.

I have seen the same when working with this film (black spots). It seemed nobody else was having problems, so I thought it was either my paper, which was kind of old, or had something to do with my processing. The spots for me always occur around the edges of the film, and not in the center. I've only tried the 120.

I have shot about 10 rolls and found both the black spots and light leaks at the top and bottom of the spool, a few roll had significant streaking. I do like the film characteristics but at this this point I will not reorder until the quality controls improves.

Is anyone else seeing little specks missing in the emulsion, leaving little black specks on their prints? I have seen this problem in both 120

YES! I just processed 4 rolls. I usually load my Holga with so perhaps I didn't notice. But this time, I used it in my Hasselblad and processed with PMK. I thought maybe I was using a non hardener fixer that did it but I did notice pinholes. Every roll had some time type of pinprick hole in them. I thought maybe it was h20 or not enough water bath before processing. I think I'll leave the JandC 100 in the Holga.

I have also had specks of missing emulsion on the sample 4x5 sheets of J&C Pro 100 I purchased recently.

I'm really disappointed in the emulsion coating problems, but I don't expect any improvements until the price goes way up. I guess we get what we pay for after all.

Jay

It depends on what you mean by "way up". I've seen Agfa APX100 selling for as low as $1.85 per roll of 120 on the web with the most common price around $2.09 per roll. That's still pretty cheap compared to many other films & no ones complaining sbout their quality. The Chinese will eventually get it right & still be cheaper than anyone else.

J&C Pro in Rodinal 1+50 + 4g/l ascorbate for 10 minutes at 20C, agitating 1/minute looks good.

I thought the negatives were thin, but after putting them in the enalrger there is much more shadow detail htan I thought.
I couldn't see grain in a 6X enlargement which bothered me a bit

I was prpobably missing some Rodinal in the 1+100 experiment I made last month.
