Let's welcome Lucky SHD in large format

I have read the film test results conducted by Lucky made in the spring of this year. The results show which developer is recommended and which is not. Also the development times.

As I know this is the Lucky SHD. I don't understand why J&C insists it is not. There is nothing obviously wrong with Lucky SHD in large format. As long as no major film defects (as reported by users already), Lucky SHD will perform well in 4x5 and 8x10 format and we will have more choices.

After other film manufacturers slowly exit the large format b&W film market, we are very lucky to have Lucky SHD available in large format.

Let's welcome Lucky SHD in large format.

Looking at the inside of a Lucky SHD film box gives development times in D-76 in the 5 minute range. Our PRO film needs 9-10 minutes.

Looking at a roll of SHD and a roll of PRO I see two totally different films.

Buy some PRO and Lucky SHD and compare yourself.

You got any initial times with PMK (1:2:100) ?

New times based on additional testing:

A49 - 6.5
D76 - 9.5
HC110 B - 7.5
Neofin Blue - 14
PMK 1+2+100 - 13.5
Rodinal 1/25 - 8.5
Rodinal 1/50 - 13.5
Spur SLD - 5
Xtol - 7
R09 1/40 - 9.5

The initial times posted yesterday were based on basic testing. Many of these tests are being conducted by others who are helping us out so there are probably variations in methods, procedures etc. These numbers are lower in some cases but they look like more accurate times. We will have more in a couple of weeks.

Ordered today box of J&C Pro 4X5 - looking forward to trying it. Also ordered few boxes of J&C 200 for 2X3 format - thanks JAndC for increasing my film choices for my Century Graphic. Except for possible purchases of TechPan & Azo, the yellow box company is losing my support.

Again, this film is Lucky SHD. Lucky does not make another B&W sheet film for pictorial photography purpose.

Here is some of the test results from Lucky. For reference only.

Film name / dilution / development time

Kodak D-76 1+2 10
Kodak HC110 C dilution 10
Kodak XTOL 1+2 12
Kodak RS not recommented
AGFA Rodinal 1+50 8
AGFA Rodinal 1+25 not recommented
Lucky HB-17 1+40 13 ( can be found in China)
PMK A+2B+50 10
Pyro-HD A+2B+50 7
Pyro-HD A+2B+100 10

There are also some test results for AZO paper, direct contact prints. I did not put it here.

I don't understand. Why would JandC order film from Lucky, brand one as JandC Pro, and then sell SHD as well?

JandC kept stating that this isn't SHD film. I'm guessing he would know cause he's the one ordering them from China.

Just want to make the fact straight.

< I don't understand. Why would JandC order film from Lucky, brand one as JandC Pro, and then sell SHD as well?

According to what I read here, J&C will sell SHD in 35mm and 120 format only. J&C sells J&C PRO brand in large format only. You may read J&C's original post on this. There is no redundency here.

< JandC kept stating that this isn't SHD film. I'm guessing he would know cause he's the one ordering them from China.

Freestylesales never publicly tell anyone their Arista films are from Ilford, right?

There are some differences of film thickness, between sheet film and roll film. Just like Kodak Tri-X or Plus-X. Other than that the films are the same. You cannot say they are different films because of the thickness etc.

Again, it is great to see Lucky SHD sheet films and I will definitely try and use them. Just want to make the fact straight.

Okay, you win I give up. I just ordered 20 rolls of JandC Pro 120mm yesterday to test out so I'm thinking they are selling large and medium format PRO.

Whether the film is Lucky SHD, another film made at the same plant, or something completely different, I'm very happy to have the choice available. As I've only run one roll through an old Bessa and apparently over-developed it, I can only safely say that the roll I saw had no emulsion defects and had great tonality (where I hadn't blown out the highlights). I'm looking forward to more testing of this film in both 120 and sheet film sizes.

Thanks to J and C for giving me more options, and for an outstanding price for the film.

Just one more request for clarification from jandc...the D-76 times are, I assume, for undiluted developer, not for 1:1. Is this correct?

Again, thanks for your commitment to B&W film.

Thanks J&C for providing us with even more sheet film choices. I am ordering some 4x5 J&C Pro 100 and the new improved Classic 400. I look forward to receiving both films.

What size 4X5 sheet film?

Anybody have size problems with the J&C Pro 100? I received my shipment last week & tried loading the J&C Pro 100 4X5 into film holders but was unsuccessful. I had to buckle the film for it to fit. Wasted a sheet in order to measure it:
Efke 100 4X5 - 99mm
J&CPro 100 4X5 - 101mm
Is this a problem with Chinese factory quality control?

I haven't had a chance to load up any of the 4x5 or 8x10 yet; I just returned from Europe yesterday and won't have a chance to pull out the sheet film for a few more days. I will report anything I find, good or bad.

4x5 film is not literally 4" x 5". Agfa APX is 99mm x 126 mm. Is this Chinese film really 101mm wide? If so, that means it might not fit in film holders. I do not know of a practical way to cut pan film to proper size. I ran into this problem years ago when I bought some 4x5 litho film that was exactly 4" x 5" and I could not use it in film holders, but at least I could cut it under safelight. Has anyone else received the new J&C pro 100 yet? My order has not been sent yet.

I'll reserve judgement until I get my hands on a sheet. As soon as it arrives I'll measure one sheet and post the dimensions.

Doug,

Thanks for the information. We checked some of the packages and it seems that they are running around 100mm on average. This is on the edge of the ANSI specification for 4x5. 101 mm is over the specification. It seems that the film is excellent but the cutting QC in China may not be what it should be. We had this first test purchase cut at the Chinese factory. Our plans for future sizes call for the shipment of jumbo rolls to our European factory for cutting into various sizes. So in the future this will not be a problem.

We have had customers report excellent results using the 4x5 film so this problem does not affect everyone. Should anyone else run into this problem please contact us directly and we will sort it out.

Thanks

I'd like to compliment J&C on their quick response. It is a pleasure to deal with a Company that raises the bar for customer satisfaction. I plan to standardize on their films for my photo needs.

John,

When you said that you have measured some packages and found that the sheets average 100mm wide, have you determined if all sheets in a package are the same dimension or is it that the sizing varies within individual packages? I am sure that this will be corrected. It is unfortunate that it happened.

There is no significant size difference within a package of 25 sheets. The variation is between whole packages. If the first sheet works all should be fine.

jandc-

I have to ask the obvious...do you have any reports of size issues with the 8x10 film?

Thanks,
Dave

We have no reports. However, we have sampled a few packages. The 8x10 is also cut to the edge of the ANSI specification in the "8" direction. We have measured up to 203mm and as low as 202mm. The 202mm sheets fit 3 different holders we tried. The 203mm fit one fidelity holder but not the others.

again, if you have holder problems because of the size of the film please contact us directly and we will take care of it.

I have decided to keep my one package of oversized J&C Pro 100 film rather than return it. I might use it for making internegatives from 4x5 or 35mm transparencies or interpositves from 4x5 negatives. The error in sizing will not matter and for the low price it is ideal for experimenting.

For those customers that have purchased this film in 4x5 and 8x10. We are offering either a full refund on the purchase price or an exchange for an equal amount of J&C Classic 200 film. In either case you can keep the PRO 100 film you bought.

We anticipate having a new supply properly cut in Spetember.

In the mean time all current supplies of the oversized film have been put on discount for anyone who can use it. This film is being sold cheap but "as is" with regard to the oversize condition.

In addition, the new pricing on the J&C Classic 200 and 400 films in all the large format sizes is almost on par with the PRO film.

Since I've never used this film, problems with it are not an issue for me, but WOW....whoever has experienced an explanation, apology or even a condescending nod from a manufacturer in public when faced with a complaint. Bravo J and C!! With an attitude like theirs, you simply can't go wrong.
