B&W in the latest issue of Newsweek

There is some beautiful B&W work in the latest edition of Newsweek in its "1000 Words" feature. They really shows the power of B&W photography to concentrate the image and stealing someone's signature here, remove the the distracting color.

A long time ago I was reading Newsweek (I think) in a waiting room and I noticed the black and white images were vignetted. I thought they looked like Holga images. I did a bit of googling and found the artists' email and contacted him and sure enough! It was indeed shot entirely with a Holga all black and white. I think it was David Michael Kennedy but it's been awhile. It's nice to see black and white used to it's full power.

Those were probably David Burnett. He did some great Holga stuff while following the Gore campaign. Since then, he's been seen often with a Speed Graphic and an Aero Ektar.

I'm really sorry I didn't name the photographer and now I'm at work and my Mag is at home. It wasn't Burnett, the first name was "Jan" I'll find it.

I didn't mean in the current issue, but the Holga shots that Surly mentions from a while back were probably David Burnett.

The Photographer whose B&W pics from the Pakistani quake zone is Jan Grarup. I'd love to know what he used.

Thanks John! I visited his site and after figureing out how the heck to navigate it (Note to artists: Lose the over designed websites!) He's Danish and quite well known. I sent him an e-mail telling him about APUG and asking about his cameras, film etc.

gandolfi? any of our Scandanvian friends? Can you tell us more?

Like you guys I still shoot analog. mostly that is -
I use mainly Leica M6 cameras with 28/35/50 mm. lenses
the film I use are Ilford xp2 plus, it`s a BW film developed c-41
shooting color I use Fuji.

Oh my goodness.

That first image is completely overpowering. I think of "The Steerage" as reinterpreted by Terry Gilliam. That's just amazing stuff.

Funny he says that. The first thing that hit me when i opened his page, except for lots of good images, was that he must be using leica m About film I was more unsure. Not very strange since I've never used any c41 bw films. At some images I would have thought tri-x but the tonality combined with little grain (even for small pictures), particularly in peoples faces, just wasn't the tri-x look.

one of the most known is joachim Ladefoged.. he was associated to Magnum at one time, I think..

Newsweek Nov 28, 2005 pp 34-35.

This is just my impression but think of that plank and the mass of humanity as filtered through Gilliam's visual exaggeration. For what it's worth, Steerage does nothing for me, and Jan's picture is magic.

On the other hand, my mind seems to have played me false. I remember people on the plank in the famous Stieglitz picture, whereas in fact there are none. Oh well; I used to have a brain that worked.

Jan Grarup is featured in a book called "pludselig i verdensklasse" "suddenly worldclass"
about the Danish photographers Claus Bjørn Larsen, Jan Grarup, Jan Dagø, Tine Harden, Joachim Ladefoged, Nicolai Fuglsig, who all won international prizes. At the time it was released, in the late 90ies or early this century I think, they all worked with film and, as stated, some of them still do. All I can say is that their work is very inspiring to me.
