Is anyone going to the photo expo at the Jacob Javits center in NYC? ...or has it become more of a digital show? It starts Nov 2nd.

Hi Drew,

I will probably be going to the show again this year as long as it does not interfere with my schedule. The show has been getting smaller and smaller over the years and digital is becoming more prevalent and film less common.

whenever we (my family & friends) go to NYC, we drive to greenwich, Ct and take the train in. I'd leave "very" early in the am and come home "very" late!

Anyone interested in joining me, we could meet up and carpool.

also, the Ocala (sp?) to nyc is about 80 bucks out of Rt 128 station in Dedham
This, of course, if for those from eastern end of New England.

Jeff,

My girlfriend lived there for a long time. Her mother and daughter still do. That was my starting point when I was participating in the Florida Circuit for Art Shows. It is still getting built up.

You are certainly right about at least much of Maine. Talk about big expanses of very few people per square mile and lots and lots of trees, particularly as you move away from the coast.

Maybe Drew was thinking of the high speed Acela train.

you had said "ocala", which is a city in florida. the acela is the train from boston to dc. the downeaster runs from portland to boston.

and to go back to the original post, i'll bet the expo is all about the digital.

Richard Ritter and I went down 2 years ago, driving to Fairfield from Vermont and taking the train. It was an adventure.

The show is almost all digital and a lot smaller than it was in the late 80s when I manned the booth at Zone VI, and I think that the "real" photographers and their equipment suppliers have quietly headed for the door. That's why Richard and I no longer go.

On the other hand, the Javits Center is mere blocks from B&H, and a pilgrimmage there is worth it.

In the end, a tough call. Were I to go, Javits wouldn't be first on the list...I'd arrange to visit MOMA, the Met, and B&H, I think, and be a "photo tourist."

I went last year, and it was mostly digital. I felt I was quite out of place, but the free film from Fuji & Kodak made it somewhat worthwhile!

For those interested... the Valley Photo Center is sponsoring a bus to NYC to coincide with PhotoPlus Expo on Sat Nov 4. The price is $40.00 for non-subscribers (to Portfolio mag) and $35.00 for subscribers. The bus hold 54 passangers and there is about 47 seats left at this early point.
The bus will leave Springfield at 6:45 am and the return trip back from NYC will leave at 6:00 pm. You don't have to attend the Expo if you don't want to. many of the VPC faithful just use Javitts Center as a drop off and pick up point.
If you want to reserve a seat on the bus, please send a check to:
Valley Photo Center
1500 Main St
Springfield, MA 01115

If you have any questions, please contact Chris Marion at chris@valleyphotocenter.com or just PM me.

Gene, thanks for the heads up on the bus...I'd spend that much on gas. I'll check with my better half and get back to you.

Got my pass sitting on the piano waiting to go. It's local for me so I might wander over 'though I suspect is mostly digital.

If APUGers choose to gather somewhere at the time - I'd be interested.

You don't need to call anyone to get free passes. Just goto their website at http://www.photoplusexpo.com/ and register. Every year, you'll be reminded as well of the show, plus they will mail you the badge.

We have a few seats left for Sat Nov 4 trip to the Javitts Center. If anyone in the New England area is interested please give me a call at 413-781- 1553 (except this Tues - I will be at a soccer game) for more info.
The bus leaves the Springfield area from the Plantaion Inn, which is at the eastern end of Rte 291 where it meets the MassPike.
I haven't decided if I want to wander around NYC looking for spmething to point my camera at or visit the Expo in the am and go wandering later.

Kevin Viner from Elevator will be there fri or sat and we are bringing some samples of the new Ilford/Harmon Digital Fibre base paper.
He is the tall ugly guy with the zipper on the back of his head. Not to be mixed up with the short ugly guys from UK.
Unfortunately I cannot make it but we hope to have samples of the paper toned and as well from various input *bw film, print, colour neg, trans and of course digital capture.
